Setup and Assembly

1. Charging the Battery

  1. Connect the charger to a standard electrical outlet.
  2. Slide the 20V MAX battery into the charger. Ensure it clicks into place.
  3. Allow the battery to charge fully before first use. Refer to the charger's indicator lights for charging status.

2. Attaching the Trimmer Head

The trimmer can operate with either a resin blade head or a string trimmer spool head. Choose the appropriate head for your task.

  • To attach a head, align the head with the shaft and twist until it locks securely.
  • To switch between heads, use the provided tool to unscrew the current head, then attach the desired head.

3. Adjusting Handle and Height

Adjust the auxiliary handle and the trimmer's height for comfortable operation.

  • Loosen the adjustment collar on the shaft.
  • Extend or retract the shaft to your desired height.
  • Tighten the collar to secure the height.

Operating Instructions

1. Starting and Stopping

  • To start: Press the safety lock-off button and then squeeze the trigger switch.
  • To stop: Release the trigger switch.

2. Trimming and Edging

The trimmer is designed for both trimming grass and edging along hard surfaces.

  • Trimming: Hold the trimmer at a slight angle, sweeping it from side to side across the area to be trimmed.
  • Edging: Rotate the trimmer head 90 degrees to convert it into a wheeled edger. Guide the wheel along the edge of your lawn or pathway for clean lines.

3. Speed Control

Utilize the 2-speed control feature to optimize performance for different tasks.

  • Use the higher speed setting for powering through tough overgrowth and heavy weeds.
  • Select the lower speed setting to extend runtime for lighter trimming tasks.

4. Automatic Feed Spool (AFS)

The AFS system automatically feeds the string line as needed, eliminating the need for manual bumping.

5. Runtime

The 20V MAX battery provides up to 62 minutes of runtime on a single charge, depending on the speed setting and workload.

Maintenance

1. Blade/Spool Replacement

  • Always disconnect the battery before performing any maintenance.
  • Resin Blades: Replace worn or damaged resin blades by snapping new ones into place. The unit features on-board storage for up to 6 spare blades.
  • String Spool: When the string line is depleted, replace the spool with a new BLACK+DECKER AFS compatible spool.

2. Cleaning and Storage

  • After each use, clean the trimmer housing and cutting head with a damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals.
  • Store the trimmer in a dry, secure location out of reach of children.
  • Remove the battery from the trimmer before storing for extended periods.
