Setup and Installation

This drain is specifically engineered for sinks that do not have an overflow hole, making it suitable for vessel sinks and certain vanity tops. Ensure your sink is compatible before proceeding.

Tools and Materials (Not Included):

  • Plumber's putty or silicone sealant
  • Adjustable wrench or basin wrench
  • Clean cloth

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare the Sink Opening: Ensure the sink drain opening is clean and free of any old sealant or debris.
  2. Apply Sealant: Apply a bead of plumber's putty or silicone sealant around the underside of the drain flange (the top part that sits inside the sink).
  3. Insert Drain: Insert the drain assembly through the sink opening from the top. Ensure the flange is centered and seated firmly.
  4. Secure from Below: From underneath the sink, slide the rubber washer, then the friction washer, and finally thread the lock nut onto the drain body.
  5. Tighten: Hand-tighten the lock nut, then use an adjustable wrench to carefully tighten it further. Do not overtighten, as this can crack the sink or damage the drain. Wipe away any excess sealant that squeezes out.
  6. Connect P-Trap: Connect your P-trap assembly to the bottom of the drain tailpiece. Ensure all connections are secure and watertight.
  7. Test for Leaks: Fill the sink with water and then release it, carefully checking all connections for any signs of leaks.

Operation

The Danco 12120A drain features a simple push-button mechanism for easy operation.

  • To Close the Drain: Press down firmly on the top of the drain stopper. It will click into the closed position, sealing the drain.
  • To Open the Drain: Press down firmly on the top of the drain stopper again. It will click into the open position, allowing water to flow freely.

Maintenance

Regular cleaning and maintenance will help preserve the finish and functionality of your drain.

  • Cleaning the Finish: Clean the matte black finish with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, or scouring pads, as these can damage the finish. The premium finish is designed to be scratch, corrosion, and tarnish resistant.
  • Clearing Debris: Periodically remove the stopper by unscrewing it (if applicable, or by pulling it out if it's a simple drop-in type) and clear any hair or debris that may have accumulated. Rinse the stopper and drain body thoroughly before reinserting.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your drain, refer to the following common solutions:

  • Slow Draining: This is often caused by hair or debris accumulation. Follow the "Clearing Debris" steps in the Maintenance section. If the issue persists, the clog may be further down in the P-trap or plumbing system, requiring further investigation.
  • Leaks Around Drain: Check the tightness of the lock nut underneath the sink. Ensure that plumber's putty or silicone sealant was properly applied during installation. If necessary, disassemble, reapply sealant, and re-tighten.
  • Stopper Not Sealing/Opening: Ensure no debris is obstructing the stopper mechanism. If the mechanism feels stiff, a small amount of silicone grease can be applied to moving parts (avoiding contact with water flow areas).
