3. Setup

Follow these steps for the initial setup of your GMKtec AD-GP1 docking station:

  1. Power Off Devices: Ensure both the AD-GP1 eGPU dock and your host device (Mini PC, laptop, gaming console) are completely powered off before connecting any cables. (Important: The Oculink interface does not support hot-plugging. Plugging or unplugging while powered on may damage the motherboard.)
  2. Connect Oculink or USB4 Cable: Connect the provided Oculink cable to the Oculink port on the AD-GP1 and your host device. Alternatively, if your device supports USB4 (Thunderbolt 3 & 4 compatible), use the provided Type-C cable to connect to the USB4 port.
  3. Connect Power Adapter: Plug the 240W power supply adapter into the DC IN port on the AD-GP1, then connect it to a power outlet.
  4. Connect Display(s): Connect your monitor(s) to the AD-GP1 using the HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 2.0 outputs. The dock supports up to four displays simultaneously (2x HDMI2.1 for 8K@60Hz, 2x DP2.0 for 8K@60Hz).
  5. Power On: First, power on the AD-GP1, then power on your host device. This ensures the host device recognizes the eGPU during boot.

4. Operating the AD-GP1

The AD-GP1 is designed to provide a significant boost to your device's graphical performance. Here's how to maximize its potential:

4.1 Graphics Performance Enhancement

The integrated AMD Radeon 7600M XT GPU with RDNA 3.0 architecture delivers exceptional graphics performance. For optimal gaming and rendering, ensure your display is connected directly to the AD-GP1. Disabling your laptop's internal display when using an external monitor connected to the eGPU can prevent performance degradation.

4.2 Multi-Monitor Setup

The AD-GP1 supports up to four independent displays with 2x HDMI2.1 and 2x DisplayPort 2.0 outputs, all capable of 8K@60Hz. This allows for extensive multi-tasking or immersive gaming experiences across multiple screens.

4.3 Device Compatibility

The versatile Oculink and USB4 ports ensure broad compatibility with various devices, including:

  • Mini PCs
  • Laptops
  • Notebooks
  • Gaming Consoles (e.g., Legion Go, Rog Ally X)
  • Handheld Consoles
Various usage scenarios for the GMKtec AD-GP1, including with a laptop, in an office setup, with a desktop, a mini PC, and a handheld gaming device.

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your AD-GP1, please observe the following:

  • Placement: Do not stand the unit vertically as it will block the cooling vents and lead to overheating. Always place it horizontally on a flat, stable surface.
  • Cleaning: Keep the cooling vents clear of dust and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth for external cleaning. Avoid liquid cleaners.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow around the unit to prevent heat buildup.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No Display/Recognition:
    • Ensure both the AD-GP1 and your host device are powered off before connecting cables. Power on the AD-GP1 first, then the host device.
    • Verify your host device's USB-C port supports USB4 (40Gbps) or Thunderbolt 3/4 for full compatibility. Standard USB-C 3.x ports may not work for eGPU functionality.
    • Check that the necessary graphics drivers for the AMD Radeon 7600M XT are installed on your operating system. AMD provides automatic driver detection and installation tools.
  • Performance Issues:
    • For optimal performance, connect your display directly to the AD-GP1's video outputs. Routing video through your laptop's internal display may cause performance degradation.
    • Ensure your host device's CPU is not a bottleneck. Some CPU-intensive games may not show significant performance gains even with an eGPU if the CPU is maxed out.
  • Power Supply Issues:
    • If the power brick stops working, ensure you are using the original 20V 12A (240W) power adapter. Using an incorrect power supply can lead to malfunction.
  • Mac Compatibility:
    • The AD-GP1 is not compatible with Apple Silicon (M-series) Macs. It should work with older Intel-based Macs that support external GPUs via Thunderbolt.
  • Linux Compatibility:
    • Linux users need to download the corresponding AMD drivers to ensure proper functionality. GMKtec does not currently offer optimized Linux drivers.
