5. Setup

5.1 Mounting the Camera

  1. Ensure the grip is in a stable position, either held firmly or deployed as a tripod.
  2. Align the 1/4"-20 screw on the top of the grip with the tripod mount on your camera.
  3. Gently screw the camera onto the grip until secure. The grip includes rubber pads to prevent scratches to your camera.
  4. Verify the camera is securely attached before use.

5.2 Charging the Remote Control

The remote control features a USB-C charging port.

  1. Connect a USB-C cable to the charging port on the remote control.
  2. Connect the other end of the cable to a power source.
  3. A full charge takes approximately 2.5 hours and provides up to 40 hours of use.

Note: Remote control charging input voltage must not exceed 8V.

5.3 Pairing the Remote Control

The grip features modular magnetic wireless control. To pair the remote control with your camera:

  1. Turn on your camera's Bluetooth function.
  2. Turn on the remote control using the Power Button.
  3. Refer to your camera's manual for specific Bluetooth pairing instructions. For some Canon cameras, pressing the "C" button and the "REC" button simultaneously may initiate pairing mode.
  4. Select the SmallRig SR-RG2 from your camera's Bluetooth device list to complete pairing.

5.4 SmallRig Up App for Firmware Updates

For broader camera compatibility and improved functionality, it is recommended to regularly check for firmware updates via the SmallRig Up App.

  1. Download the SmallRig Up App from your device's app store.
  2. Connect your grip to the app following the in-app instructions.
  3. Check for available firmware updates and follow the prompts to install them.

6. Operation

6.1 Using the Grip as a Handle

Hold the grip comfortably for stable handheld shooting. The ergonomic design provides a secure hold for your camera.

6.2 Extending as a Selfie Stick

The grip can be extended to 14.6cm (5.7in) for wider framing and different perspectives.

  1. Gently pull the top section of the grip upwards to extend it.
  2. Adjust to your desired length.
  3. Ensure it is securely locked in place before use.

6.3 Deploying as a Tripod

The grip transforms into a stable desktop tripod for hands-free operation.

  1. Fold out the legs at the base of the grip.
  2. Place the tripod on a flat, stable surface.
  3. Ensure the camera is balanced to prevent tipping.

6.4 Remote Control Functions

The detachable remote control allows for wireless operation of your compatible camera within a range of up to 10m (32.8ft).

  • Focus / Shutter Button: Half-press to activate autofocus, full-press to take a photo.
  • REC Button: Press to start video recording, press again to stop.
  • TW: Zoom Button: Use 'T' for telephoto zoom (zoom in) and 'W' for wide-angle zoom (zoom out).
  • Customizable "C" Button: This button can be assigned to various functions through your camera's settings or the SmallRig Up App, depending on camera model.

6.5 Adjusting Shooting Angles

The grip offers flexible angle adjustments for diverse shooting needs.

  • 360° Pan: Use the rotate button or manually adjust the camera's horizontal position.
  • 180° Tilt: Use the tilt button or manually adjust the camera's vertical angle (90° forward and 90° backward).

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the grip with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Storage: Store the grip in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Battery Care: For optimal battery life, avoid fully discharging the remote control frequently. Charge it regularly, even if not in use for extended periods.
  • Load Capacity: Adhere to the specified load capacities: 1.5kg (3.3lb) when not extended and 0.8kg (1.76lb) when extended, to ensure stability and prevent damage.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Remote Control Not Pairing:
    • Ensure both the remote control and your camera's Bluetooth are turned on.
    • Check camera compatibility (Section 4).
    • Try restarting both the remote and the camera.
    • Ensure the remote control is charged.
    • For Canon cameras, try pressing the "C" and "REC" buttons simultaneously to enter pairing mode.
  • Remote Control Range Issues:
    • Ensure there are no obstructions between the remote and the camera.
    • Reduce the distance between the remote and the camera.
    • Check for potential interference from other wireless devices.
  • Grip Stability Issues (Tripod Mode):
    • Ensure the tripod legs are fully extended and placed on a flat, stable surface.
    • Verify that your camera and lens combination does not exceed the specified load capacity (1.5kg unextended, 0.8kg extended).
    • Ensure the camera is balanced on the grip.
  • Charging Issues:
    • Ensure the USB-C cable is properly connected to both the remote and the power source.
    • Try a different USB-C cable or power adapter.
    • Confirm the charging input voltage does not exceed 8V.
