Key Features

  • Compact and Lightweight Design: Measuring 12.9 x 6.69 x 8.5 inches and weighing 24 pounds, this Group 31 battery is significantly lighter than comparable lead-acid batteries, making it easy to handle and install. It fits perfectly into standard BCI Group 31 battery boxes.
  • High Usable Energy: Provides 1280Wh of usable energy output, which is 2 to 3 times that of a typical SLA battery of the same size. It supports a maximum 100A continuous discharge current, capable of powering most electrical equipment.
  • Advanced Smart BMS: The integrated Battery Management System (BMS) offers comprehensive protection against overcharging, over-discharging, over-current, and features an excellent self-discharge rate. It also includes a built-in high-temperature cutoff to prevent charging temperatures from exceeding 50 °C.
  • Flexible Charging Options: Can be recharged using a lithium iron phosphate battery charger (14.6V 20A charger recommended for a 5-hour fast charge), a solar panel with a compatible controller, or an alternator (generator).
  • Expandable Capacity: Multiple 12V 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries can be connected in parallel (up to 4P for 400Ah capacity) or in series (up to 4S for 48V/51.2V voltage) to meet higher power requirements.
  • Long Lifespan: Offers an impressive lifespan of 4,000 to 15,000 deep cycles (4000 cycles at 100% DOD, 6000 cycles at 80% DOD, 15000 cycles at 60% DOD), providing a 10-year service life, which is equivalent to approximately 6 lead-acid batteries. Unlike lead-acid batteries, discharging below 50% does not significantly shorten its life.
  • Durable Construction: Made of ABS & PC materials, providing IP65 waterproof and drop-resistant properties.

VEMDIA LiFePO4 Battery Series and Parallel Connections

Figure 4: Support for connecting up to 4S4P configurations. This diagram visually explains how multiple VEMDIA 12.8V 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries can be connected in parallel (4P for 12.8V 400Ah, 5120Wh), in series (2S for 25.6V 100Ah, 2560Wh), or in a combination of parallel and series (4P4S for 51.2V 400Ah, 20480Wh) to achieve higher capacity or voltage.

Setup

Before installation, ensure the battery is fully charged. The battery comes with M8 terminal bolts for secure connections. Always connect the positive (+) terminal (red) to the positive lead of your system and the negative (-) terminal (black) to the negative lead. Ensure all connections are tight to prevent arcing and ensure optimal performance.

For applications requiring higher voltage or capacity, refer to the 'Connections for Higher Capacity' section under 'Key Features' for proper series and parallel wiring diagrams. Always use appropriate wiring gauges for your application to prevent overheating and ensure safety.

This image provides the dimensions of the battery (32.7cm/12.87inch length, 17cm/6.69inch width, 21.58cm/8.58inch height) and highlights the M8 terminal bolts. It also states that 'Red is positive, Black is negative', and notes 'Lower internal resistance, less heat' and 'Excellent electrical conductivity'.

Operating the Battery

The VEMDIA LiFePO4 battery is designed for deep-cycle applications, meaning it can be discharged significantly without damaging its lifespan. The built-in Smart BMS actively manages the battery's state to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Charging

The battery can be charged using:

  • A dedicated LiFePO4 battery charger (14.6V 20A charger recommended for optimal charging speed).
  • Solar panels with a compatible charge controller.
  • An alternator (generator) in vehicle applications.

Always ensure your charging source is compatible with LiFePO4 batteries to prevent damage and ensure safety. The BMS will automatically protect the battery from overcharging.

Discharging

The battery supports a continuous discharge current of up to 100A. The BMS will prevent over-discharging by cutting off power if the voltage drops below a safe threshold (typically around 9.2V, though some users have reported it activating at 8V). Avoid consistently discharging the battery to extremely low voltages to maximize its overall lifespan, even though LiFePO4 chemistry is more tolerant than lead-acid.

Maintenance

LiFePO4 batteries require minimal maintenance compared to lead-acid batteries. However, following these guidelines will ensure optimal performance and longevity:

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically check the battery terminals for cleanliness and tightness. Ensure there is no corrosion or loose connections.
  • Temperature Control: While the battery has low-temperature protection, avoid operating or charging it in extreme temperatures. The built-in high-temperature cutoff protects against charging above 50 °C. For optimal performance, operate within recommended temperature ranges.
  • Storage: If storing the battery for an extended period, ensure it is charged to approximately 50-70% capacity. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid Deep Discharges: Although LiFePO4 batteries tolerate deep discharges, it is generally recommended to avoid consistently draining the battery to its absolute minimum voltage to prolong its overall life.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your VEMDIA LiFePO4 battery, consider the following common problems and solutions:

  • Battery Not Charging:
    • Verify that the charger is specifically designed for LiFePO4 batteries and is providing the correct voltage (14.6V recommended).
    • Check all connections for tightness and proper polarity (red to positive, black to negative).
    • Ensure the battery temperature is within the safe charging range (above 0°C and below 50°C). The BMS may prevent charging outside this range.
  • Battery Not Providing Power (No Output):
    • Check the battery's voltage using a multimeter. If it's below the nominal voltage (12.8V) or the BMS cutoff threshold (around 9.2V), the battery may be in a low-voltage protection mode and needs charging.
    • Ensure the load current does not exceed the maximum continuous discharge current (100A). The BMS will cut off power if an overcurrent condition is detected.
    • Inspect all wiring and connections for any breaks, corrosion, or loose points.
  • Reduced Capacity or Shortened Runtime:
    • Ensure the battery is being fully charged. Incomplete charging cycles can lead to perceived capacity loss.
    • Verify that the load is not consistently exceeding the battery's rated capacity or discharge limits.
    • Extreme operating temperatures can temporarily affect performance. Allow the battery to return to a moderate temperature.
