Setup and Assembly

1. Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove the kayak and all components from the storage bag. Inspect all parts for any signs of damage. Ensure all included items are present:

  • One (1) McKenzie 105 Kayak
  • One (1) Core 2 Seat
  • One (1) Touring Fin
  • One (1) Storage Bag
  • One (1) Halkey-Roberts Valve Adaptor

2. Inflation

The McKenzie 105 features three easy-access Halkey-Roberts style valves for inflating the main tubes and the floor. Refer to the pressure indicators next to each valve for correct PSI levels. A 12-volt electric low-pressure pump is recommended for quick inflation, followed by a hand pump for topping off to the proper pressure. Pumps are not included and are sold separately.

3. Seat Installation

The Core 2 seat provides a thick padded cushion and a breathable, adjustable high backrest for support and comfort. It utilizes a six-point attachment system with quick-release buckles for secure anchoring and easy removal.

  1. Position the seat cushion on the inflatable floor.
  2. Attach the quick-release buckles from the seat to the stainless steel D-rings located on the kayak's tubes.
  3. Adjust the straps to ensure the seat is securely anchored and provides optimal comfort and support.

4. Fin Installation

The touring fin is made with flexible vinyl for durability and safety, attaching to a universal US fin box in the stern. This system allows for easy replacement or customization with shorter fins for shallow water or longer fins for increased tracking.

  1. Locate the fin box at the stern (rear) of the kayak.
  2. Slide the touring fin into the fin box.
  3. Secure the fin using the hand screw and plate system. No tools are required.

Operating Instructions

1. Launching and Entry

Due to its lightweight design (approximately 20 lbs), the McKenzie 105 is easy to carry using the comfortable bow and side handles. The open cockpit design facilitates easy entry and exit.

2. Paddling and Maneuverability

The kayak's hybrid design is optimized for both whitewater and flatwater. The flat rocker profile in the center provides stability on rivers and improved tracking on flat water. The high rocker at the bow helps to blast over waves and prevent the nose from bearing, while the high rocker at the stern increases maneuverability and prevents pearling.

3. Self-Bailing System

The McKenzie 105 features four large mesh self-bailing drains strategically located to quickly drain water from the cockpit in whitewater conditions. When paddling flatwater, this system allows less water into the cockpit compared to full-length drain systems, resulting in a quieter, drier, and more efficient glide.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the kayak thoroughly with fresh water. Use a mild soap solution and a soft brush or cloth to clean any dirt or debris. Ensure all mesh drains are clear of obstructions.

2. Drying

Completely dry the kayak before deflating and storing to prevent mildew and material degradation. Allow it to air dry in a shaded area, or use a soft towel.

3. Storage

Deflate the kayak and fold it neatly into the included backpack-style storage bag. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. The compact design allows for easy storage in a car trunk, closet, or RV, and can even be checked as luggage on a flight.

Troubleshooting

  • Loss of Air Pressure: Check all valve caps to ensure they are tightly sealed. Inspect the kayak's surface for any punctures or leaks. Small leaks can often be repaired with a patch kit (not included).
  • Poor Tracking: Ensure the touring fin is properly installed and securely fastened. For flatwater, the fin is crucial for straight-line tracking. If tracking is still an issue, consider purchasing a longer fin for increased tracking.
  • Water in Cockpit: Verify that the self-bailing mesh drains are not clogged. In calm flatwater conditions, some minimal water might enter, but excessive water indicates a potential issue with the drains or a leak.
  • Over-inflation: The floor features a pressure relief valve to protect against over-inflation. However, always adhere to the recommended PSI levels indicated next to the valves. Avoid leaving the kayak in direct hot sunlight for extended periods when fully inflated, as heat can increase internal pressure.
