2. Setup Instructions
2.1 Unpacking and Initial Inspection
Carefully unpack the Sophos XGS 88W appliance and its accessories. Verify that all components listed in the packing slip are present and inspect the device for any physical damage. If any items are missing or damaged, contact your vendor immediately.
2.2 Connecting the Appliance
- Power Connection: Connect the power adapter to the 'DC IN 12V' port on the rear of the appliance and then to a power outlet.
- Network Connections:
- Connect your internet service provider's modem or router to the '2/WAN' port using an Ethernet cable.
- Connect your internal network switch or a computer directly to one of the '1/LAN' or '3/DMZ' ports.
- USB and Console Ports: The USB ports can be used for external storage or 5G/LTE modems (on supported models). The 'COM' port is for console access for advanced configuration.
- Antenna Installation: Attach the two external Wi-Fi antennas to the designated connectors on the rear of the appliance. Ensure they are securely fastened.

2.3 Powering On

3. Operating the Appliance
3.1 Initial Configuration via Sophos Central

To begin, access Sophos Central via a web browser and follow the on-screen instructions to register your appliance and perform the initial setup. This includes defining network zones, setting up firewall rules, and configuring Wi-Fi settings.
3.2 Network Security Features
- Firewall Rules: Configure inbound and outbound traffic rules to control network access.
- Intrusion Prevention System (IPS): Enable IPS to detect and block network attacks.
- Web Filtering: Apply policies to control access to websites based on categories and reputation.
- Application Control: Manage and prioritize network application usage.
- VPN: Set up Virtual Private Network connections for secure remote access or site-to-site connectivity.

4. Maintenance
4.1 Firmware Updates
Regularly update the appliance firmware to ensure optimal performance, security, and access to the latest features. Firmware updates are typically managed through Sophos Central. Follow the prompts within the management interface to apply updates.
4.2 Monitoring and Reporting
Utilize the monitoring and reporting features in Sophos Central to keep track of network activity, security incidents, and appliance health. This helps in proactive identification and resolution of potential issues.
4.3 Backup Configuration
Regularly back up your appliance configuration. This allows for quick restoration of settings in case of a system failure or misconfiguration.
5. Troubleshooting
5.1 No Power
- Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to both the appliance and a working power outlet.
- Check the power outlet with another device to confirm it is functional.
5.2 No Internet Connectivity
- Verify that the Ethernet cable from your modem/router is correctly connected to the '2/WAN' port.
- Check the status of your internet service provider's modem/router.
- Confirm that your Sophos XGS 88W has obtained an IP address from your ISP. This can be checked in Sophos Central.
- Ensure that firewall rules are not inadvertently blocking internet access.
5.3 Wi-Fi Issues
- Check that the external Wi-Fi antennas are properly attached.
- Verify Wi-Fi settings (SSID, password, security protocol) in Sophos Central.
- Ensure the Wi-Fi radio is enabled.
5.4 Appliance Reset
If the appliance is unresponsive, a soft reboot can be performed via Sophos Central. For a factory reset, locate the 'Reset' button on the rear panel (refer to Figure 2). Use a paperclip to press and hold the button for approximately 10 seconds until the status LEDs change, indicating a reset. Warning: A factory reset will erase all configurations and restore the appliance to its default settings.
