A proper rowing stroke consists of four phases: the Catch, the Drive, the Finish, and the Recovery.

  • Catch: Knees bent, shins vertical, arms extended forward, back straight, shoulders relaxed.
  • Drive: Push off with your legs, then swing your back, and finally pull with your arms.
  • Finish: Legs extended, back slightly reclined, handle pulled to your abdomen.
  • Recovery: Extend arms, then pivot forward from the hips, then bend knees to slide forward.

Maintain a smooth, continuous motion. The ratio of drive to recovery should be approximately 1:2.
