1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your Surpass Hobby Pocket-RC 130A Sensored Brushless Electronic Speed Controller (ESC). Please read this manual thoroughly before using the product to ensure safe and optimal performance. This ESC is designed for 1/10 scale RC cars utilizing 380, 390, or 540 sensored brushless motors.

2. Safety Precautions

  • Always ensure correct polarity when connecting the battery to prevent damage to the ESC.
  • Never leave batteries near fire or extreme temperatures.
  • Always ensure charging batteries are attended to by an adult at all times.
  • Always use a compatible charger.
  • Always disconnect batteries if they become hot during charging.

7. Installation & Connections

Follow these steps to correctly install and connect your ESC to your RC vehicle components.

7.1 Motor Connection

Connect the three motor phase wires (A, B, C) from the ESC to the corresponding motor terminals. Ensure a secure connection for optimal performance.

7.2 Sensor Cable Connection

For sensored brushless motors, connect the sensor cable from the motor to the 'SENSOR' port on the ESC. This provides precise motor control.

7.3 Receiver Connection

Connect the ESC's throttle cable (usually a three-wire servo connector) to the throttle channel (CH2) on your RC receiver.

7.4 Battery Connection

Connect your battery pack to the main power input wires of the ESC, ensuring correct polarity (red to positive, black to negative). The ESC uses an XT60 connector for battery input.

8. Operating Instructions

Once all connections are made, ensure your remote control is powered on and the throttle trim is at neutral. Power on the ESC using its integrated switch. The ESC will perform a self-test and emit a series of beeps indicating battery cell count. After initialization, the ESC is ready for operation.

9. Programming & Parameter Adjustment

The ESC parameters can be adjusted using a dedicated mobile application. This allows fine-tuning of settings such as running mode, Lipo cell count, BEC voltage, cutoff voltage, motor rotation, brake force, reverse force, acceleration, and more.

10. Maintenance

  • Regularly inspect all wires and connectors for damage or loose connections.
  • Keep the ESC clean and free from dirt, dust, and debris. Use a soft brush or compressed air.
  • Ensure the cooling fan is free from obstructions and functioning correctly. If the fan is damaged, it can be replaced (see Figure 10.1).
  • Store the ESC in a dry, cool place when not in use.

11. Troubleshooting

  • No Power: Check battery connections, ESC switch, and ensure the battery is charged.
  • Motor Not Responding: Verify receiver connection, throttle calibration, and motor phase wire connections. Check sensor cable if applicable.
  • Overheating: Ensure adequate airflow to the ESC and motor. Check for excessive load on the motor or incorrect gear ratio.
  • Erratic Behavior: Check for radio interference, loose connections, or incorrect ESC programming.

12. Firmware Update

Keeping your ESC firmware updated can improve performance and add new features. Firmware updates can typically be performed via the mobile application.
