2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety warnings and instructions before installing or operating this product. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Always disconnect power to the pump before performing any service or maintenance.
  • Ensure the electrical outlet is properly grounded and protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI).
  • Do not operate the pump if the power cord or plug is damaged.
  • Keep children and pets away from the filter system during operation.
  • Ensure the filter system is placed on a firm, level surface to prevent tipping.
  • Do not run the pump dry. Ensure it is primed with water before starting.
  • Handle pool chemicals with care and follow their manufacturer's instructions.

4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps for proper assembly and installation of your sand filter system.

  1. Placement: Position the filter system on a solid, level surface, preferably below the water level of the pool for optimal priming. Ensure it is close enough to an appropriate electrical outlet, utilizing the 6ft power cord for flexible placement.
  2. Add Filter Sand: Remove the multi-port valve from the top of the filter tank. Carefully pour approximately 30 lbs of #20 silica sand (0.018-0.022 inch quartz sand particles) into the tank. Ensure the standpipe inside the tank remains centered.
  3. Install Multi-Port Valve: Place the 6-way multi-port valve onto the top of the filter tank, aligning it with the standpipe. Secure the valve to the tank using the provided clamp or locking ring. Ensure a tight seal to prevent leaks.
  4. Connect Pump to Filter: Attach the pump to the filter tank using the short connecting hose and clamps. Ensure all connections are secure and leak-free.
  5. Connect Pool Hoses: Use the provided hose adapters to connect your pool's inlet and outlet hoses to the filter system. The system is compatible with both 1-1/2" and 1-1/4" pool hoses. The pool's return line connects to the 'RETURN' port on the valve, and the suction line from the pool connects to the pump's inlet.
  6. Install Pressure Gauge: Screw the pressure gauge into the designated port on the multi-port valve. Apply Teflon tape to the threads for a secure, leak-free seal.
  7. Priming the Pump: Before starting, ensure the pump is filled with water. Open the air relief valve on the pump (if present) or remove the pump lid and fill the pump basket with water. Close the valve/lid securely.
  8. Electrical Connection: Plug the 6ft power cord into a properly grounded GFCI-protected electrical outlet.

5. Operating Instructions

The 6-way multi-port valve allows for various operational modes to maintain your pool's cleanliness. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position.

  • Filter: This is the normal operating position for filtering pool water. Water flows through the sand, trapping debris, and returns to the pool.
  • Waste: Used for vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste, bypassing the filter. Also used for lowering the pool water level.
  • Closed: Shuts off all flow to the filter. Use this position only when the pump is off and you are performing maintenance or cleaning the pump basket.
  • Backwash: Reverses the flow of water through the filter to clean the sand bed. Water is discharged to waste. Perform backwash when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure.
  • Recirculate: Circulates water through the system without filtering it. Useful for distributing chemicals without filtering.
  • Rinse: Used immediately after backwashing to settle the sand bed and flush any remaining dirty water to waste before returning to Filter mode. Run for 30-60 seconds.

Figure 5: Illustration of the 6-way valve functions, detailing each mode for comprehensive pool maintenance.

General Operation Tips:

  • Run the filter system for at least 8-12 hours daily, or as needed, to maintain clear water.
  • Monitor the pressure gauge regularly. An increase in pressure indicates the filter needs backwashing.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your sand filter system.

  • Backwashing and Rinsing: Perform backwash and rinse cycles as described in the Operating Instructions section when the pressure gauge indicates.
  • Sand Replacement: Filter sand typically needs to be replaced every 3-5 years, depending on usage and water quality.
  • Pump Basket Cleaning: Periodically clean the pump's strainer basket to remove large debris that could impede flow. Ensure the pump is off and disconnected from power before opening the basket.
  • Winterization: In colder climates, drain all water from the pump, filter, and hoses to prevent freezing damage. Store the pump and valve indoors if possible.

7. Troubleshooting

Refer to this section for common issues and their potential solutions.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Low water flow / Poor filtrationClogged filter sand; Clogged pump basket; Air leak in suction line; Pump not primed.Perform backwash/rinse; Clean pump basket; Check all connections for air leaks; Re-prime pump.
Pump not primingAir in system; Low water level in pool; Clogged suction line.Ensure pump is filled with water; Check pool water level; Clear any blockages in suction line.
Water leaking from connectionsLoose connections; Damaged O-rings/gaskets; Improperly seated gaskets.Tighten all connections; Inspect and replace O-rings/gaskets if damaged; Ensure gaskets are flat and well-seated during assembly.
Pressure gauge leaksImproperly sealed threads.Remove gauge, reapply Teflon tape generously to threads, and re-install securely.
Drain leaks on filter tankImproperly seated drain gasket.Disassemble drain, ensure gasket is flat and well-seated, then reassemble. Consider testing without sand first to verify seal.
Pump is noisyLack of water (running dry); Air leak in suction line; Debris in impeller.Ensure pump is primed; Check for air leaks; Inspect impeller for obstructions (disconnect power first).
