4. Setup & Installation

Installation of the Quietcool QC CL-4700 RF is designed to be straightforward, typically taking 1 to 2 hours. No framing or joist-cutting is required for standard installations.

4.1 Pre-Installation Checklist:

  • Verify adequate attic ventilation (minimum 5.89 sq. ft. net free area).
  • Ensure a power outlet is available in the attic or can be safely installed.
  • Confirm ceiling joist spacing (16 or 24 inches on-center) for proper fan placement.
  • Gather necessary tools: drywall saw, electric drill, screwdriver, level, stud finder, ladder.

4.2 Installation Steps:

  1. Locate Installation Area: Determine the desired location for the fan in the attic, ensuring one side of the ceiling cutout will be directly next to a ceiling joist for mounting.
  2. Create Ceiling Cutout: Using the provided template or measuring 14 in. x 30 in., mark the ceiling. Carefully cut out the opening using a drywall saw. Remove the drywall cutout and clear away any insulation in the area.
  3. Position Fan in Attic: Take the fan unit into the attic and place it over the ceiling cutout. The fan motor head hangs from the attic rafters, with the damper box positioned over the ceiling opening.

  5. Secure Damper Box: Attach the damper box to the ceiling joists using the included screws.
  6. Install Ceiling Grille: From below, install the air intake grille into the ceiling cutout using the provided screws.
  7. Connect Power: Plug the fan's 20-foot power cord into a standard 120V outlet in the attic.
  8. Mount Wireless RF Control: Attach the wireless RF switch to a convenient wall location or use it as a portable remote anywhere in your home.

5.2 How Whole House Fans Work:

Whole house fans operate by drawing cooler outside air into your home through open windows and exhausting warmer indoor air into the attic and out through attic vents. This process rapidly cools your home and attic, reducing the heat load on your air conditioning system.

Video 3: Explanation of how a whole house fan operates to cool your home.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your Quietcool whole house fan.

  • Grille Cleaning: Periodically clean the air intake grille located in your ceiling to ensure unobstructed airflow. Use a soft cloth or vacuum cleaner.
  • Attic Vent Inspection: Annually inspect attic vents to ensure they are clear of debris (e.g., leaves, bird nests) and provide adequate airflow.
  • Damper Door Check: Ensure the R5 insulated damper doors open and close freely. The nylon bushings are designed for lifelong operation without lubrication.
  • Motor Inspection: The permanent split-capacitor motor is built to last and requires minimal maintenance. Inspect for any unusual noises or vibrations during operation.
