4. Setup
- Battery Installation: Open the battery compartment located on the back of the device. Insert the AAA battery, ensuring correct polarity. Close the compartment securely.
- Initial Power On: Press the "READ" button to turn on the device. The display will illuminate.
- Clean the Prism: Before first use and before each measurement, ensure the prism surface is clean and dry. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the prism.
5. Calibration
For accurate measurements, the refractometer must be calibrated with distilled water. Perform calibration at room temperature (20-25°C / 68-77°F).
- Ensure the prism surface is clean and dry.
- Using the transfer pipet, place 2-3 drops of distilled water onto the prism surface. Ensure the water completely covers the prism.
- Close the prism cover gently.
- Press and hold the "ZERO" button for approximately 2 seconds until "CAL" appears on the display.
- Release the "ZERO" button. The display will show "END" indicating successful calibration.
- Wipe the distilled water from the prism and cover with a clean, dry cloth. The device is now ready for measurement.
6. Operation
Follow these steps to take a measurement:
- Ensure the refractometer has been calibrated as described in Section 5.
- Clean the prism surface thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Using the transfer pipet, place 2-3 drops of the sample liquid onto the prism surface. Ensure the sample completely covers the prism.
- Close the prism cover gently.
- Press the "READ" button. The display will first show the sample temperature, then the Brix percentage.
- Record the measurement.
- After measurement, immediately clean the prism and cover with distilled water and a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent residue buildup.

7. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Always clean the prism and cover immediately after use with distilled water and a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the prism surface.
- Storage: Store the refractometer in its carrying case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Battery Replacement: When the low battery indicator appears, replace the AAA battery promptly to ensure continued accurate operation.
- Water Resistance: The device is water-resistant, but it is not submersible. Avoid prolonged exposure to water.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Inaccurate readings | Prism not clean; improper calibration; insufficient sample volume; sample temperature outside operating range. | Clean prism thoroughly; recalibrate with distilled water; ensure prism is fully covered by sample; allow sample to reach room temperature. |
| Display shows "CAL" repeatedly or fails to calibrate | Insufficient distilled water; prism not clean; "ZERO" button not held long enough. | Ensure 2-3 drops of distilled water cover the prism; clean prism; hold "ZERO" button for 2 seconds until "CAL" appears. |
| Device does not power on | Dead battery; incorrectly installed battery. | Replace AAA battery; check battery polarity. |
| Display is dim or flickering | Low battery. | Replace AAA battery. |
