4. Setup

  1. Battery Installation: Open the battery compartment located on the back of the device. Insert the AAA battery, ensuring correct polarity. Close the compartment securely.
  2. Initial Power On: Press the "READ" button to turn on the device. The display will illuminate.
  3. Clean the Prism: Before first use and before each measurement, ensure the prism surface is clean and dry. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the prism.

5. Calibration

For accurate measurements, the refractometer must be calibrated with distilled water. Perform calibration at room temperature (20-25°C / 68-77°F).

  1. Ensure the prism surface is clean and dry.
  2. Using the transfer pipet, place 2-3 drops of distilled water onto the prism surface. Ensure the water completely covers the prism.
  3. Close the prism cover gently.
  4. Press and hold the "ZERO" button for approximately 2 seconds until "CAL" appears on the display.
  5. Release the "ZERO" button. The display will show "END" indicating successful calibration.
  6. Wipe the distilled water from the prism and cover with a clean, dry cloth. The device is now ready for measurement.

6. Operation

Follow these steps to take a measurement:

  1. Ensure the refractometer has been calibrated as described in Section 5.
  2. Clean the prism surface thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  3. Using the transfer pipet, place 2-3 drops of the sample liquid onto the prism surface. Ensure the sample completely covers the prism.
  4. Close the prism cover gently.
  5. Press the "READ" button. The display will first show the sample temperature, then the Brix percentage.
  6. Record the measurement.
  7. After measurement, immediately clean the prism and cover with distilled water and a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent residue buildup.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Always clean the prism and cover immediately after use with distilled water and a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the prism surface.
  • Storage: Store the refractometer in its carrying case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Battery Replacement: When the low battery indicator appears, replace the AAA battery promptly to ensure continued accurate operation.
  • Water Resistance: The device is water-resistant, but it is not submersible. Avoid prolonged exposure to water.

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Inaccurate readingsPrism not clean; improper calibration; insufficient sample volume; sample temperature outside operating range.Clean prism thoroughly; recalibrate with distilled water; ensure prism is fully covered by sample; allow sample to reach room temperature.
Display shows "CAL" repeatedly or fails to calibrateInsufficient distilled water; prism not clean; "ZERO" button not held long enough.Ensure 2-3 drops of distilled water cover the prism; clean prism; hold "ZERO" button for 2 seconds until "CAL" appears.
Device does not power onDead battery; incorrectly installed battery.Replace AAA battery; check battery polarity.
Display is dim or flickeringLow battery.Replace AAA battery.
