Introduction

The Keychron K17 Max is a versatile 96% layout ultra-slim wireless mechanical keyboard designed for enhanced productivity and gaming. It supports multiple connection modes including 2.4GHz, Bluetooth 5.1, and wired USB. This keyboard features QMK/VIA customization for personalized key mapping and is compatible with Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems. It comes equipped with low-profile Gateron mechanical switches and White LED backlighting.

Setup

1. Unboxing and Initial Charge

Carefully remove the keyboard and all accessories from the packaging. Before first use, it is recommended to fully charge the keyboard using the provided USB-C cable. Connect the cable to the keyboard's USB-C port and a power source. The charging indicator will show the charging status.

2. Connection Modes

The K17 Max supports three connection types: 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.1 wireless, and wired USB-C.

2.1. 2.4GHz Wireless Connection

  1. Locate the 2.4GHz USB receiver.
  2. Plug the receiver into an available USB port on your computer.
  3. On the keyboard, slide the mode switch to the '2.4G' position.
  4. The keyboard should automatically connect. If not, press Fn + 4 to initiate pairing.

2.2. Bluetooth 5.1 Wireless Connection

  1. Slide the mode switch on the keyboard to the 'Bluetooth' position.
  2. Press and hold Fn + 1 (or Fn + 2, Fn + 3 for other devices) for 4 seconds until the indicator light flashes rapidly, indicating pairing mode.
  3. On your device (computer, smartphone, tablet), enable Bluetooth and search for 'Keychron K17 Max'.
  4. Select the keyboard to pair. The indicator light will stop flashing upon successful connection.

2.3. Wired USB-C Connection

  1. Connect the USB-C cable to the keyboard's port and the other end to your computer's USB port.
  2. Slide the mode switch on the keyboard to the 'Cable' position.
  3. The keyboard will function as a wired device and charge simultaneously.

3. Operating System Switch

The K17 Max has a dedicated switch to toggle between Windows/Android and Mac/iOS layouts. Ensure this switch is set correctly for your operating system to ensure proper key functionality.

Operating Instructions

1. Keyboard Layout Overview

The Keychron K17 Max features a 96% JIS layout with a dedicated number pad and function row. Familiarize yourself with the key positions for efficient use.

2. Key Customization with QMK/Launcher

The K17 Max supports QMK/VIA firmware, allowing for advanced key remapping and macro creation. Keychron provides a web-based Launcher application for easy customization.

  1. Ensure your keyboard is connected via wired USB-C mode.
  2. Open a modern web browser (Chrome, Opera, Edge) and navigate to the Keychron Launcher web application (e.g., Keychron QMK/VIA page).
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to detect your keyboard and customize key assignments, macros, and lighting effects.

3. Backlight Control

The K17 Max features White LED backlighting. Use the following key combinations to control the backlight:

  • Fn + Light Key: Cycle through different backlight effects.
  • Fn + Arrow Up/Down: Adjust backlight brightness.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

To clean your keyboard, disconnect it from your device. Use a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water or a mild cleaning solution. Avoid spraying liquids directly onto the keyboard. For dust and debris between keycaps, use compressed air or a small brush.

2. Switch and Keycap Replacement

The K17 Max may offer hot-swappable switches depending on the specific model variant. If your model is hot-swappable, you can replace switches without soldering. Use the provided keycap puller and switch puller tools for safe removal and installation.

  • Keycap Removal: Gently pull the keycap straight up using the keycap puller.
  • Switch Removal: Use the switch puller to grasp the top and bottom clips of the switch and pull it straight up.
  • Switch Installation: Align the new switch's pins with the holes on the PCB and press down firmly until it clicks into place. Ensure pins are not bent.
  • Keycap Installation: Align the keycap with the switch stem and press down gently.

Troubleshooting

1. Keyboard Not Responding

  • Ensure the keyboard is charged.
  • Check the connection mode switch (2.4G, Bluetooth, Cable) is set correctly.
  • For 2.4GHz, ensure the receiver is properly plugged in.
  • For Bluetooth, re-pair the device if necessary.
  • Try connecting via USB-C cable to rule out wireless issues.

2. Keys Not Registering or Double Typing

  • Clean under the keycaps for any debris.
  • If your model is hot-swappable, try reseating the affected switch or replacing it with a new one.
  • Perform a factory reset (see below).

3. Backlight Not Working

  • Ensure the keyboard is charged.
  • Adjust brightness using Fn + Arrow Up/Down.
  • Cycle through effects using Fn + Light Key.

4. Factory Reset

To perform a factory reset, press and hold Fn + J + Z for 4 seconds. This will revert all settings to their default state. Use this as a last resort for persistent issues.
