Setup and Adjustment

1. Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove the trekking poles and all accessories from the carrying bag. Inspect all components for any signs of damage. Ensure all parts listed in the package contents are present.

  • 2x TrailBuddy Trekking Poles
  • 2x Mud Baskets
  • 2x Snow Baskets
  • 4x Rubber Tips
  • 1x Carrying Bag

2. Adjusting Pole Length

TrailBuddy trekking poles feature lever locks for easy and quick length adjustment. The poles can be adjusted from a collapsed length of 24.5 inches (62.2 cm) to a maximum extended length of 54 inches (137.2 cm).

  1. Open the Lever Locks: Locate the lever locks on each section of the pole. Flip them open to allow the pole sections to slide freely.
  2. Extend to Desired Height: Extend the pole sections until the desired length is reached. Ensure that the number markings on the middle and bottom sections of the pole shafts are aligned to the same number to indicate the full length of the pole from handle to tip. Refer to the height guide below for a recommended starting length.
  3. Close the Lever Locks: Once the desired length is set, firmly close the lever locks. Ensure they are securely fastened to prevent slippage during use. If the locks feel too loose or too tight, adjust the tension screw on the clamp.

Sizing Tip: Your arms should be parallel to the ground when holding the poles.

3. Attaching Accessories

The trekking poles come with various interchangeable accessories designed for different terrains. These accessories screw onto the threaded tips at the bottom of your poles.

  • Rubber Tips: Ideal for hard, flat, or rocky surfaces. They provide good grip and act as shock absorbers, protecting both the pole tip and the environment.
  • Mud Baskets: Prevent poles from sinking into soft ground, mud, or other soft surfaces.
  • Snow Baskets: Prevent poles from sinking into snow. Note: Collapsible trekking poles should not be used for downhill or cross-country skiing.

Important: Before each use, ensure all accessories are screwed on tightly to prevent loss on trails. Give them a tug to confirm they are secure.

Operating Instructions

1. Proper Grip and Strap Usage

The cork handles are designed to mold to the shape of your hand over time, offering a comfortable and moisture-wicking grip. The padded straps provide extra support and prevent chafing.

  1. Inserting Hand: Gently lift the strap upwards while it is inside the pole handle. This will lift the small spikes underneath that are holding the strap in place.
  2. Adjusting Strap: While the strap is lifted, pull on it to adjust the length. If the strap is too long, it will not provide adequate support. If it is too short, it will restrict movement. Adjust until comfortable.
  3. Securing Strap: Once adjusted, push the strap back down into the handle to secure it.

2. Uphill and Downhill Techniques

  • Going Uphill: Shorten the poles to avoid overstretching and maintain an efficient stride.
  • Going Downhill: Lengthen the poles to avoid bending too much and to provide additional stability.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in muddy or wet conditions, wipe down the poles with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry completely before storing.
  • Storage: Store poles in their collapsed state in the provided carrying bag in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight.
  • Tip Replacement: Regularly inspect rubber tips and baskets for wear and tear. Replace worn accessories to maintain optimal performance and safety.

Troubleshooting

Pole Sections Slipping:

If the pole sections slide down or collapse during use, the lever locks may need adjustment.

  1. Tighten the Screws: With the lever lock open, use a small screwdriver or coin to turn the screw on the clamp clockwise by a quarter to half turn.
  2. Test and Re-adjust: Close the lever lock and test the pole by applying full body weight. If it still slips, repeat the tightening process. If it becomes too difficult to close the lever, loosen the screw slightly.

Important Safety Reminder: Injury or accident can result if poles are not properly locked. Perform a full-body weight test before every use or hike. If this is your first time using trekking poles, take your poles out on a short walk or hike before major use to familiarize yourself with them.
