Setup and Installation

Before beginning installation, ensure the power supply to the existing disposal or wiring is turned off at the circuit breaker. Review all local plumbing and electrical codes.

Components Included:

  • Disposer unit with pre-attached power cord.
  • Mounting assembly (flange, fiber gasket, support ring, mounting ring, screws).
  • Stopper/Splash Guard.
  • Hex wrench (for clearing jams).

Installation Steps:

  1. Remove Old Disposer (if applicable): Disconnect power, plumbing, and then detach the old disposer from the sink flange.
  2. Install New Mounting Assembly: Clean the sink opening. Apply plumber's putty around the sink flange and insert it into the sink opening. From below the sink, place the fiber gasket, support ring, and mounting ring onto the flange. Secure with screws, ensuring a tight seal.
  3. Connect Dishwasher Drain (if applicable): If connecting a dishwasher, a knockout plug must be removed from the disposer's dishwasher inlet. Use a screwdriver and hammer to tap out the plug from the inside of the inlet. Retrieve the plug from inside the disposer. Connect the dishwasher drain hose to this inlet using a hose clamp.
  4. Attach Disposer to Mounting Assembly: Align the disposer's three mounting tabs with the mounting ring. Twist the disposer until it locks into place. Ensure it is securely seated.
  5. Connect Drain Plumbing: Connect the disposer's discharge outlet to your household drain system using the provided elbow and gasket. Secure all connections with clamps and nuts.
  6. Electrical Connection: The Badger 1 comes with a pre-attached power cord. Plug the power cord into a grounded 120V outlet.
  7. Test for Leaks: Turn on the water and check all connections for leaks. Run the disposer briefly to ensure proper function.

Operating Instructions

The InSinkErator Badger 1 operates with a continuous feed mechanism, allowing you to add food waste while the unit is running.

Basic Operation:

  1. Turn on a medium flow of cold water.
  2. Flip the wall switch to turn on the disposer.
  3. Slowly feed food waste into the disposer opening. Do not overload the unit.
  4. After grinding is complete, turn off the disposer and let the water run for a few seconds to flush the drain line.

Note: This model is designed for effective grinding of common food scraps. While it is not the quietest disposer, its performance is efficient for everyday use.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your disposer.

Cleaning:

  • To clean the disposer, grind small pieces of citrus peels (lemons, oranges) with cold water. This helps to freshen the unit and clean the grinding chamber.
  • Avoid pouring grease or oil down the drain, as this can solidify and cause clogs.

Clearing Jams:

If the disposer hums but does not grind, it may be jammed. Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the disposer and the water.
  2. Insert the provided hex wrench into the center hole on the bottom of the disposer.
  3. Work the wrench back and forth until the jam is cleared and the motor shaft turns freely.
  4. Remove the wrench and press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposer.
  5. Turn on the water and then the disposer to test.
