Initial Formatting (Optional but Recommended for Mac Users):

For optimal performance, especially with Mac computers, it is recommended to reformat the SSD to APFS (Apple File System). This process will erase all data on the drive, so ensure it is empty or back up any necessary files before proceeding.

  1. Connect the SSD to your Mac.
  2. Open 'Disk Utility' (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility).
  3. Select the SanDisk Extreme PRO SSD from the sidebar.
  4. Click the 'Erase' button in the toolbar.
  5. Choose 'APFS' as the format and 'GUID Partition Map' as the scheme.
  6. Click 'Erase' to confirm.

For Windows users, the drive typically comes pre-formatted in exFAT, which is compatible with both Windows and macOS. Reformatting to NTFS (New Technology File System) can offer better performance and features for Windows-only use.

4. Operating the SSD

Data Transfer:

Once connected, the SSD functions like any other external drive. You can drag and drop files, copy and paste, or use your operating system's backup utilities to transfer data. The USB4 interface ensures rapid transfer speeds for large files and extensive data sets.

Compatibility with Mobile Devices:

This SSD offers broad compatibility, including with many modern smartphones and tablets that support USB-C connectivity, allowing for direct storage and access of files from these devices.

5. Maintenance

Care and Handling:

  • Avoid exposing the SSD to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for extended periods.
  • While rugged and IP65 rated, avoid intentional submersion in water or exposure to excessive dust.
  • Clean the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Always safely eject the drive from your operating system before disconnecting to prevent data corruption.

6. Troubleshooting

Slow Transfer Speeds:

  • Ensure you are using the provided USB Type-C to Type-C cable, which supports USB4 speeds.
  • Connect the SSD to a USB4 or Thunderbolt 4/5 compatible port on your computer for maximum performance. Older USB ports will result in lower speeds.
  • Verify the drive's format. Reformatting to APFS for Mac or NTFS for Windows (if exclusively used with Windows) can optimize performance.
  • Close any unnecessary applications running in the background that might be consuming system resources.

Drive Not Detected:

  • Try connecting the SSD to a different USB-C port on your computer.
  • Test with a different USB Type-C cable to rule out cable issues.
  • Restart your computer and try connecting the SSD again.
  • Check your operating system's Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (macOS) to see if the drive is recognized but uninitialized or unformatted.

Overheating:

The SSD features an aluminum core designed for heat dissipation. While it is built to handle prolonged heavy use without throttling, ensure adequate airflow around the device, especially during intensive tasks.
