1. Introduction
The XAXAX MD4030 Metal Detector is a professional-grade tool designed for detecting various metal objects hidden underground. It is ideal for treasure hunting, archaeological exploration, finding lost items, and detecting metal foreign bodies in raw materials or food. Featuring adjustable sensitivity, two detection modes, and a waterproof search coil, the MD4030 offers reliable performance for both beginners and experienced users.
2. Safety Information
- Always check local regulations and laws regarding metal detecting before use.
- Do not use the metal detector near active electrical lines or in areas with unexploded ordnance.
- The control housing is not waterproof. Protect it from rain, splashes, and submersion. Only the search coil is waterproof.
- Use caution when digging to avoid damaging underground utilities or historical artifacts.
- Keep batteries out of reach of children and dispose of them properly.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can damage the device.
3. Package Contents

4. Assembly Instructions
Follow these steps to assemble your MD4030 Metal Detector:
- Attach the Search Coil: Connect the search coil to the lower stem using the provided connecting rod and knob. Ensure it is securely fastened but allows for slight angle adjustment.
- Connect the Stems: Insert the lower stem into the upper stem. The length can be adjusted later to suit your height.
- Mount the Control Housing: Slide the control housing onto the top of the upper stem. Secure it in place, ensuring the armrest is positioned comfortably for your forearm.
- Connect the Cable: Wrap the search coil cable neatly around the stem, securing it with the provided clips or ties. Plug the cable connector into the corresponding port on the control housing. Ensure the connection is firm.
- Install Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the control housing and insert two 9V 6F22 batteries, observing the correct polarity. Close the compartment securely.
- Adjust Length: Adjust the length of the stem to a comfortable height that allows the search coil to be parallel to the ground when you are standing upright.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Controls and Functions
- Power Switch: Turns the detector ON/OFF.
- Sensitivity (SENS): Adjusts the detector's sensitivity to metal objects. Higher sensitivity allows detection of smaller or deeper objects but may increase false signals.
- Volume (VOL): Controls the loudness of the audio alert.
- Discrimination (DISC): Allows the user to discriminate against certain types of metal, preventing the detector from responding to unwanted metals like iron.
- Detection Indication: The detector uses both a mechanical pointer (V.U. meter) and an audio tone to indicate the presence of metal. The pointer deflects and the tone changes when metal is detected.
- Headphone Jack: For connecting headphones (not included) for use in noisy environments or for private searching.
5.2 Detection Modes
The MD4030 offers two primary detection modes:
- All Metal Mode: Detects all types of metal objects, including iron nails, aluminum rings, coins, gold, bronze, and silver. This mode offers the deepest detection capability.
- Discrimination Mode: Allows you to filter out certain metals, typically iron, to focus on more valuable targets. Adjust the DISC knob to set the discrimination level.
5.3 Basic Operation
- Power On: Turn the Power Switch to the ON position.
- Ground Balance: Before starting, perform a quick ground balance by holding the search coil parallel to the ground and slowly sweeping it back and forth. Adjust sensitivity until the detector is stable and not giving false signals.
- Select Mode: Choose between "All Metal" or "Discrimination" mode based on your search objectives.
- Sweep the Coil: Hold the detector with the search coil about 1-2 inches above the ground. Sweep the coil slowly from side to side in overlapping arcs.
- Identify Targets: When a metal object is detected, the mechanical pointer will deflect, and an audio tone will sound. The strength of the signal indicates the size and proximity of the object.
- Pinpointing: Once a target is detected, narrow down its location by sweeping the coil in a smaller "X" pattern over the area.

6. Applications
The MD4030 Metal Detector is versatile and can be used for a variety of applications, including:
- Finding lost metal objects such as keys, jewelry, or coins.
- Testing for metal foreign bodies in raw materials, fuel, and food.
- Detection of underground pipelines and lines.
- Archaeological exploration and treasure hunting for buried gold, silver, and metal artifacts.
- Acquisition of scrap metal in industrial settings.
- Customs and safety inspections.
- Police department detective searches and detection of contraband.
- Checking for metal foreign bodies in express delivery and luggage.

7. Maintenance and Care
- Cleaning: Wipe the detector with a damp cloth after each use. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the detector in a dry, cool place when not in use. Remove batteries if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
- Battery Replacement: Replace batteries when the detector's performance diminishes or the low battery indicator (if present) activates.
- Cable Care: Ensure the search coil cable is not pinched or damaged during use or storage.
- Water Exposure: Remember, only the search coil is waterproof. Keep the control housing dry at all times.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power / Detector does not turn on. | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. | Check battery polarity. Replace with fresh 9V batteries. |
| Constant beeping or false signals. | High sensitivity setting; electromagnetic interference; mineralized ground. | Reduce sensitivity. Move away from power lines or other electronic devices. Perform ground balance. |
| Poor detection depth. | Low sensitivity; small target; deeply buried object; incorrect sweep speed. | Increase sensitivity. Ensure you are in "All Metal" mode for maximum depth. Sweep slower. |
| Detector does not discriminate. | Incorrect DISC setting; in "All Metal" mode. | Ensure you are in "Discrimination" mode. Adjust the DISC knob to the desired level. |
| Audio is too low or distorted. | Low battery; volume setting too low; faulty headphones. | Replace batteries. Increase volume. Test with different headphones or without headphones. |
