2. Setup and Installation
2.1 Safety Precautions
- Always turn off power to the heating and cooling system at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel before installing or servicing the thermostat.
- Read all instructions carefully before beginning installation.
- Ensure all wiring complies with local electrical codes and ordinances.
2.2 Mounting the Thermostat
- Select a location on an inside wall, approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) above the floor, away from direct sunlight, drafts, or heat sources.
- Separate the thermostat from its base. Most models have a tab or latch at the bottom that allows the front cover to be removed.
- Position the thermostat base against the wall and mark the mounting holes.
- Drill pilot holes if necessary and secure the base to the wall using the provided screws.
2.3 Wiring
The Trane XR202 is designed for 1 Heat/1 Cool conventional systems. Refer to the wiring diagram on the back of your thermostat for specific terminal connections. Ensure wires are securely connected to the appropriate terminals.

2.4 Battery Installation
The thermostat requires 1 AA battery (included). Open the battery compartment, insert the battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-), and close the compartment. The thermostat will power on and begin its initial setup sequence.
3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Initial Setup (Time and Day)
- Press the Set Time button.
- Use the Up or Down arrow buttons to adjust the time.
- Press Set Time again to confirm and move to the day setting.
- Use the Up or Down arrow buttons to select the current day.
- Press Run to save and exit.
3.2 Setting Operating Mode
Use the slide switch on the left side of the thermostat to select the desired operating mode:
- Cool: Activates the cooling system.
- Off: Turns off both heating and cooling systems.
- Heat: Activates the heating system.
3.3 Fan Operation
Use the slide switch on the left side of the thermostat to select the desired fan mode:
- On: The fan runs continuously.
- Auto: The fan runs only when the heating or cooling system is active.
3.4 Programming Schedules (7-Day or 5-1-1)
The XR202 allows for flexible programming to match your lifestyle. You can set different temperatures for different times of the day and days of the week.
- Press the Menu button.
- Navigate to the 'Program' or 'Schedule' option using the arrow buttons and press Menu to select.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to set desired temperatures for each time period (e.g., Wake, Leave, Return, Sleep) for each day or group of days (e.g., Mon-Fri, Sat, Sun).
- Use the Up or Down arrow buttons to adjust temperatures and times.
- Press Menu to confirm each setting and move to the next.
- Once all desired periods are set, press Run to activate the schedule.
3.5 Temporary Hold
To temporarily override the programmed schedule, simply use the Up or Down arrow buttons to adjust the temperature. The thermostat will hold this temperature until the next programmed period begins. To cancel the hold, press the Run button.
3.6 Permanent Hold
To permanently hold a temperature, adjust the temperature using the Up or Down arrow buttons, then press the Hold button. The thermostat will maintain this temperature indefinitely until the Run button is pressed.

4. Maintenance
4.1 Battery Replacement
When the battery icon appears on the display, it indicates that the battery is low and needs to be replaced. The thermostat uses 1 AA battery.
- Open the battery compartment, typically located on the side or front of the thermostat.
- Remove the old battery.
- Insert a new AA battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment.
The thermostat's memory retention feature ensures that your settings are saved during battery replacement, so you won't need to reprogram.
4.2 Cleaning
