Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Beautiful by Drew Barrymore Slim Espresso Maker, Model DB20EM-WH. Please read this manual thoroughly before first use and retain it for future reference.

Important Safety Instructions

• Read all instructions before operating the appliance.
• Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs.
• To protect against fire, electric shock, and injury to persons, do not immerse cord, plugs, or appliance in water or other liquid.
• Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children.
• Unplug from outlet when not in use and before cleaning. Allow to cool before putting on or taking off parts, and before cleaning the appliance.
• Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug or after the appliance malfunctions or has been damaged in any manner.

Setup

1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all packaging materials and ensure all components are present.
2. Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash the portafilter, filter basket, measuring scoop/tamper, water reservoir, and drip tray with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. Wipe the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth.
3. Filling the Water Reservoir: Remove the water reservoir from the back of the machine. Fill it with fresh, cold water up to the MAX line. Do not exceed the MAX line. Place the reservoir back securely.

4. First Use Cycle (Priming): Plug the machine into a grounded electrical outlet. Press the power button to turn on the machine. The indicator lights will flash as the machine heats up. Once stable, place a large cup under the portafilter and another under the steam wand. Turn the steam/hot water knob to the hot water position to flush water through the system. Repeat this process for the steam wand to ensure it is clear.

Operating Instructions

Brewing Espresso

1. Ensure the water reservoir is filled and the machine is powered on and preheated (indicator lights solid).
2. Add finely ground espresso coffee to the filter basket in the portafilter. Use the included measuring scoop for appropriate dosage (one scoop for a single shot, two for a double).
3. Use the tamper end of the scoop to gently but firmly press the ground coffee evenly.

4. Attach the portafilter to the brewing head by aligning it and twisting firmly to the right until secure.
5. Place your espresso cup(s) on the drip tray directly under the portafilter spouts.
6. Select your desired shot size: press the Single Shot button for one espresso or the Double Shot button for two. The machine will automatically brew and stop.

7. For manual control, press the Manual Brew button to start and press again to stop.

Frothing Milk

1. Fill a stainless steel frothing pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) to just below the spout.
2. Turn the steam/hot water knob to the steam position. Wait for the steam indicator light to illuminate steadily, indicating the machine is ready for steaming.
3. Position the steam wand just below the surface of the milk. Turn the steam knob to release steam.
4. Move the pitcher up and down to create microfoam. Once desired texture is achieved, turn off the steam and remove the pitcher.
5. Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to prevent milk residue from drying.

Hot Water Dispensing

1. Place a cup under the steam wand.
2. Turn the steam/hot water knob to the hot water position. Hot water will dispense from the steam wand.
3. Turn the knob back to the off position to stop the flow.

Cup Warming Plate

The top surface of the espresso maker features a stainless steel warming plate. Place your espresso cups here to keep them warm before serving, ensuring your coffee stays hot longer.

Maintenance

Regular cleaning and maintenance ensure optimal performance and longevity of your espresso maker.

1. Daily Cleaning:
   • After each use, remove the portafilter and discard used coffee grounds. Rinse the portafilter and filter basket under running water.
   • Empty and rinse the drip tray.

   • Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth.
   • Immediately after frothing milk, wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue. Purge a small amount of steam to clear the internal nozzle.
2. Weekly Cleaning:
   • Remove and thoroughly clean the water reservoir with warm, soapy water. Rinse well.
   • Clean the shower screen (where the portafilter attaches) with a brush to remove any coffee grounds.
3. Descaling (Every 2-3 months or as needed):
   • Prepare a descaling solution according to the descaler manufacturer's instructions (or use a mixture of white vinegar and water).
   • Fill the water reservoir with the descaling solution.
   • Place a large container under the portafilter and steam wand.
   • Run several brewing cycles and dispense hot water through the steam wand until the reservoir is empty.
   • Rinse the reservoir and fill with fresh water. Run several cycles with fresh water to flush out any remaining descaling solution.
