Haozee Smart Zigbee Soil Moisture Sensor Instruction Manual

Model: HZ-SL04 | Brand: Haozee

1. Product Overview

The Haozee Smart Zigbee Soil Moisture Sensor is designed to help you monitor your plants' health by detecting ambient temperature and soil moisture levels in real-time. This device requires a Zigbee gateway (such as a TUYA HUB or Home Assistant with Zigbee2mqtt) to function and transmit data. It is suitable for various applications including greenhouses, gardens, lawns, and indoor plants.

2.3. Pairing with Zigbee Gateway

The sensor must be paired with a compatible Zigbee gateway to transmit data. Follow the instructions provided with your specific Zigbee gateway and smartphone application (e.g., Smart Life app) for pairing. Typically, this involves putting the gateway into pairing mode and then activating the sensor (often by pressing a button on the sensor, as indicated in the battery compartment diagram).

  • Ensure your Zigbee gateway is powered on and connected to your network.
  • Open your Zigbee control application (e.g., Smart Life, Home Assistant).
  • Initiate the device pairing process within the application.
  • Press the pairing button on the Haozee sensor (located near the battery compartment) to activate its pairing mode.
  • Confirm successful pairing in the application.

2.4. Sensor Placement

For accurate measurements, ensure the sensor is properly placed in the soil.

  • Insert at least two-thirds of the sensor probe into the soil.
  • Ensure the surface of the sensor probe is clean before insertion.
  • Avoid placing the sensor directly in standing water or extremely dense, compacted soil.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1. Real-Time Monitoring

Once paired, the sensor will transmit real-time soil moisture and ambient temperature data to your connected Zigbee gateway and smartphone application. You can view current readings and historical data within the app.

3.2. Temperature Unit Switching

The sensor allows you to switch between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F) temperature units. This can typically be done via a button on the sensor itself or within the connected smartphone application, depending on the specific Zigbee integration.

3.3. Smart Scene Linkage (Automation)

Leverage the sensor's data to create automated routines within your smart home ecosystem. For example, you can link the soil moisture sensor with a smart watering timer to automatically water plants when the soil humidity drops below a set threshold.

4. Maintenance

4.1. Cleaning the Sensor

To ensure accurate readings and prolong the sensor's lifespan, regularly clean the probe section. Wipe off any accumulated soil, debris, or mineral deposits with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or submerge the entire unit in water.

4.2. Battery Replacement

When the battery level is low (indicated in your smart home application), replace the two AAA batteries following the instructions in Section 2.2. Using high-quality alkaline batteries is recommended for optimal performance and longevity.

4.3. Durability and Material Care

The sensor is constructed from PC and ABS materials, offering good resistance to impact, heat, low temperatures, and chemicals. While designed for durability, avoid exposing the sensor to extreme physical shock or prolonged submersion in water beyond the probe section.

5. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Sensor not reporting data / No readings in app
  • Not paired with Zigbee gateway.
  • Weak or no Zigbee signal.
  • Dead or low batteries.
  • Sensor probe is dirty or improperly inserted.
  • Ensure the sensor is correctly paired with your Zigbee gateway (refer to Section 2.3).
  • Move the sensor closer to the Zigbee gateway or a Zigbee router.
  • Replace the AAA batteries (refer to Section 4.2).
  • Clean the sensor probe and re-insert at least two-thirds into the soil (refer to Section 4.1 and 2.4).
Inaccurate moisture or temperature readings
  • Sensor probe is not inserted deep enough.
  • Sensor probe is dirty.
  • Sensor is exposed to direct sunlight (for temperature).
  • Soil conditions are highly variable.
  • Ensure at least two-thirds of the probe is in the soil.
  • Clean the sensor probe thoroughly.
  • Relocate the sensor to a shaded area if temperature readings are consistently high due to direct sun exposure.
  • Understand that soil moisture can vary significantly even within a small area.
Battery reported as low, but sensor still functions
  • Using NiMH rechargeable batteries instead of alkaline.
  • Inaccurate battery reporting by the Zigbee system.
  • If using NiMH, this is expected due to lower voltage (2.4V vs 3V for alkaline). Functionality should not be impacted until voltage drops further.
  • Monitor actual performance; replace batteries when the sensor stops reporting or behaves erratically.
