2. Important Safety Information

Failure to follow these safety instructions could result in property damage, serious injury, or death. This appliance must be installed by a qualified professional in accordance with all local codes and regulations.

  • Electrical Safety: Ensure the unit is properly grounded. Do not operate with a damaged power cord or plug. Disconnect power before performing any service or maintenance.
  • Water Pressure: If your water pressure exceeds 0.75 MPa (approximately 108 PSI), a pressure reducing valve must be installed on the cold water inlet line to prevent potential leakage and damage.
  • Filling Before Power: Always fill the water heater with water completely before turning on the power for the first time. Operating the unit dry will activate the internal overheat protection and prevent it from working. If this occurs, disconnect power and wait 10 minutes for the tank to cool before refilling.
  • Pressure Relief Valve: The included Temperature and Pressure (T&P) relief valve is a critical safety component. It must be installed and tightened correctly. Do not use waterproof tape on the T&P valve threads, as this may interfere with its proper function and increase the risk of leakage.
  • Installation Location: Install the unit in a location where potential water leakage will not cause damage to the surrounding area.
  • Accessibility: Ensure at least 5 inches of space is reserved around the unit for installation and future maintenance.

5. Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your water heater. If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified plumber or electrician.

5.1 Installation Location

  • The unit is designed for under-sink, under-counter, or wall-mounted installation.
  • Ensure the mounting surface is structurally sound and capable of supporting the unit's weight when full (approximately 33 lbs for 4 gallons of water + unit weight).
  • Avoid locations exposed to freezing temperatures.
  • Maintain at least 5 inches of clearance around the unit for ventilation and service access.
Examples of KENUOS water heater installation locations: under sink in bathroom, under counter in kitchen, next to washing machine in laundry room

Figure 4: Recommended installation locations.

5.2 Mounting the Unit

  1. Using the provided mounting bracket kit, securely attach the brackets to the wall or cabinet according to the unit's dimensions.
  2. Carefully lift and hang the water heater onto the installed brackets, ensuring it is stable and level.

5.3 Water Connections

Refer to the diagram below for proper water line connections. All nuts must be tightened to the maximum extent to prevent water leakage.

  • Cold Water Inlet: Connect the cold water supply line to the blue-capped inlet on the top of the unit.
  • Hot Water Outlet: Connect the hot water outlet line to the red-capped outlet on the top of the unit.
  • T&P Valve Installation: Install the Temperature and Pressure (T&P) relief valve into the designated port. Ensure it is tightened securely. Do not use waterproof tape on the T&P valve threads. Connect a discharge pipe from the T&P valve to an open drain, ensuring it is sloped for proper drainage and protected from freezing.
  • Diverter Valve: The included 3-way diverter valve can be used to split the water flow for multi-point supply if needed.
  • Adapter Hoses: Use the provided 24-inch 3/4" ID to 1/2" ID adapter hoses for pipe compatibility.

5.4 Electrical Connection

  • Ensure the power outlet is a standard 120V AC, 15 Amp circuit.
  • Plug the UL-certified power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
  • Do not use extension cords or adapters.

6. Operation

6.1 Initial Startup

  1. After completing all water connections, open a hot water faucet in your sink or fixture to allow air to escape from the tank.
  2. Once water flows steadily from the hot water faucet, close the faucet. This indicates the tank is full.
  3. Plug in the water heater. The green 'INSULATION' light will illuminate, indicating the unit is powered on and maintaining temperature.

6.2 Temperature Adjustment

The water heater features a simple mechanical knob for temperature control, ranging from 86°F to 149°F.

  • Turn the knob clockwise to increase the temperature setting towards 'HIGH'.
  • Turn the knob counter-clockwise to decrease the temperature setting towards 'OFF'.
  • When the unit is actively heating water, the red 'HEATING' light will illuminate. Once the set temperature is reached, the red light will turn off, and the green 'INSULATION' light will remain on.
  • For optimal energy efficiency and safety, avoid setting the temperature higher than necessary.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and efficient operation of your water heater.

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the exterior of the unit with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Anode Rod Inspection: The internal anode magnesium rod helps reduce corrosion. It is recommended to have a qualified professional inspect and replace the anode rod every 1-3 years, depending on water quality.
  • Drainage: If the unit will be unused for an extended period or if there is a risk of freezing, drain the tank completely. Disconnect power, close the cold water supply, open a hot water faucet, and open the drain valve on the unit.

8. Troubleshooting

Before contacting customer support, review the following common issues and solutions:

  • No Hot Water / Unit Not Heating:
    • Check if the unit is plugged in and the power outlet is functional.
    • Ensure the temperature knob is not set to 'OFF'.
    • Verify that the tank was filled with water before initial power-on. If operated dry, disconnect power for 10 minutes, then refill and restart.
    • Check your circuit breaker for tripped circuits.
  • Water Leakage:
    • Ensure all water connections (inlet, outlet, T&P valve) are tightened securely.
    • Confirm that the T&P valve is installed correctly without excessive tape on threads.
    • If water pressure exceeds 0.75 MPa (108 PSI), install a pressure reducing valve on the cold water inlet.
    • A small amount of dripping from the T&P valve during heating cycles is normal due to thermal expansion. If continuous or excessive, check water pressure or consult a professional.
  • Insufficient Hot Water:
    • Increase the temperature setting using the control knob.
    • Allow sufficient recovery time between uses, especially after drawing a large volume of hot water.
