This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation of your Smeg EGF03 Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine. Please read these instructions thoroughly before first use and retain for future reference.

2. Safety Information
Always follow basic safety precautions when using electrical appliances to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and injury to persons. Ensure the appliance is connected to a grounded outlet. Do not immerse the appliance, cord, or plug in water or other liquids. Keep hands and cords away from hot surfaces.
3. Components and Accessories
Your Smeg EGF03 espresso machine comes with several components and accessories to enhance your coffee brewing experience:
- Espresso Machine with Integrated Conical Burr Grinder
- 58mm Professional Portafilter
- Stainless-steel Milk Jug
- Tamper
- Water Hardness Test Strip

- Four Filters: Two non-pressurized filters (for grinding, dosing, tamping) and two pressurized filters (for pre-ground coffee).

4. Setup
4.1 Initial Preparation
- Unpack: Carefully remove all packaging materials and components.
- Clean: Wash the water tank, portafilter, filters, milk jug, and tamper with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
- Position: Place the machine on a stable, level, and heat-resistant surface. Ensure adequate ventilation around the appliance.
4.2 Filling the Water Tank
- Remove the water tank from the back of the machine.
- Fill the tank with fresh, cold water up to the 'MAX' level indicated.
- If using a water filter, condition it as per its instructions (typically by soaking for 5 minutes) before placing it in the tank.
- Securely reinsert the water tank into the machine.

4.3 Filling the Bean Hopper
- Open the lid of the integrated conical burr grinder's bean hopper located on top of the machine.
- Pour fresh whole coffee beans into the hopper.
- Close the lid securely.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Grinding Coffee
- Select the appropriate filter basket (single or double shot) and place it into the portafilter.
- Adjust the grind size and grind amount using the dials on the machine's control panel. Finer grinds are typically for espresso.
- Position the portafilter under the grinder outlet.
- Press the grind button to start grinding. The machine will automatically dispense the set amount of coffee.

5.2 Tamping Coffee
- Place the portafilter on a flat, stable surface.
- Use the tamper to press the ground coffee firmly and evenly into the filter basket. Aim for a consistent, level surface.
5.3 Brewing Espresso
- Insert the portafilter into the group head and twist it firmly to lock it into place.
- Place your espresso cup(s) under the portafilter spouts.
- Select your desired brew mode (single or double espresso) and temperature using the control panel buttons.
- Press the start button to begin brewing. Monitor the pressure gauge to ensure optimal extraction (within the 'Espresso Range').

5.4 Steaming Milk
- Fill the stainless-steel milk jug with cold milk, typically up to just below the spout.
- Toggle the mode button to 'Steam'.
- Position the steam wand into the milk, just below the surface, at a slight angle.
- Activate the steam function. Move the jug to create a swirling motion, incorporating air to create microfoam. Continue until the jug is hot to the touch.
- Turn off the steam function and wipe the steam wand immediately with a damp cloth.

6. Maintenance
6.1 Daily Cleaning
- Portafilter and Filters: After each use, remove the portafilter and discard used coffee grounds. Rinse the portafilter and filter baskets under hot water.
- Steam Wand: Immediately after steaming milk, wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to prevent milk residue from drying. Purge the steam wand briefly to clear any internal milk residue.
- Drip Tray: Empty and clean the drip tray regularly.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth.
6.2 Descaling
Regular descaling is crucial to maintain machine performance and longevity. The frequency depends on water hardness and usage. Refer to the 'My SMEG Assistant App' or the full digital manual for detailed descaling instructions and recommended descaling solutions.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Smeg EGF03, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:
- No Espresso Flow: Check water tank level, ensure portafilter is correctly inserted, and verify coffee grind size and tamping pressure are appropriate.
- Weak Espresso/Too Fast Extraction: Adjust to a finer grind size or increase tamping pressure.
- Bitter Espresso/Too Slow Extraction: Adjust to a coarser grind size or decrease tamping pressure.
- No Steam: Ensure the machine is in 'Steam' mode and has reached the correct temperature. Check water tank level.
- Machine Not Turning On: Verify the power cord is securely plugged into a working outlet.
