3. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. Follow these steps carefully.
3.1 Assembling the Base and Tank
- Place the filter tank base on a firm, level surface.
- Secure the pump to the integrated base by sliding it into position until it clicks securely. Ensure the clips engage properly.
- Install the filter drain plug at the bottom of the tank. Ensure a large flat gasket is placed on the inside of the tank and a smaller flat gasket on the outside before screwing the cap on tightly.
- Insert the filter assembly (long pipe with bottom diffuser) into the center of the tank.
- Add the filter media (sand or filter balls) into the tank. For this 13in model, it requires approximately 70 lbs of filter sand (0.8-1.5mm particle size) or 2.2 lbs of filter balls. Ensure the filter assembly pipe remains centered.
- Place the top diffuser/cover over the filter assembly pipe.
3.2 Installing the Multi-Port Valve
- Place the 6-way multi-port valve onto the top of the filter tank. Align the "ALIGN" arrow on the valve with the arrow on the tank.
- Secure the valve to the tank using the provided flange clamp and bolts. Tighten the bolts evenly to ensure a watertight seal.
- Install the pressure gauge into the designated port on the valve.
3.3 Connecting Hoses
- Connect the short flexible hose from the pump outlet to the "PUMP" port on the 6-way valve. Secure with hose clamps.
- Connect the pool's return line to the "RETURN" port on the valve.
- Connect the pool's skimmer/main drain line to the "INLET" of the pump's strainer basket.
- Connect a backwash hose to the "WASTE" port on the valve. This hose should lead to an appropriate drainage area.
- Ensure all connections are tight and use Teflon tape on threaded fittings to prevent leaks.

4. Operating Instructions
The 6-way multi-port valve allows for various operating modes. Always turn off the pump before changing valve settings.

Detailed diagram of each valve function.
- 1. FILTER: Normal filtering mode. Water passes through the filter media and returns to the pool. This is the most common operating mode.
- 2. BACKWASH: Used to clean the filter media. Water flow is reversed, flushing trapped debris out through the waste port. Perform when pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above starting pressure.
- 3. RINSE: Used after backwashing to flush out any remaining dirty water from the filter and settle the sand. Water flows through the filter and out the waste port.
- 4. WASTE: Bypasses the filter and sends pool water directly out the waste port. Useful for vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste or lowering pool water level.
- 5. CLOSED: Shuts off all flow to the filter. Never operate the pump while the valve is in the CLOSED position.
- 6. RECIRCULATE: Bypasses the filter and circulates water directly back to the pool. Useful for mixing chemicals without filtering.
The pump features a built-in timer for automatic filtration scheduling. Refer to the pump's control panel for setting instructions.

5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your sand filter pump.
5.1 Cleaning the Strainer Basket
The pump features an integrated pre-filter with a removable strainer basket to catch coarse debris like hair, leaves, and gravel before they reach the pump impeller or filter tank.

The transparent lid allows for easy visual inspection of the strainer basket.

Close-up of the pressure gauge and the removable filter basket.
- Turn off the pump and disconnect power.
- Unscrew the transparent lid of the strainer basket.
- Remove the basket and empty any collected debris.
- Rinse the basket thoroughly with water.
- Replace the basket and securely fasten the lid. Ensure the O-ring is properly seated for a watertight seal.
5.2 Backwashing and Rinsing
Backwash your filter when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean starting pressure, or when water clarity decreases.
- Turn off the pump and disconnect power.
- Set the 6-way valve to the "BACKWASH" position.
- Reconnect power and turn on the pump. Backwash for approximately 1-2 minutes, or until the water flowing out of the waste hose is clear.
- Turn off the pump and disconnect power.
- Set the 6-way valve to the "RINSE" position.
- Reconnect power and turn on the pump. Rinse for 30-60 seconds to settle the sand and clear the lines.
- Turn off the pump and disconnect power.
- Set the 6-way valve back to the "FILTER" position.
- Reconnect power and turn on the pump for normal operation.
5.3 Winterization
Properly winterizing your pump prevents damage from freezing temperatures.
- Drain all water from the pump, filter tank, and hoses. Disconnect all hoses.
- Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the filter tank.
- Remove the multi-port valve and store it in a dry, protected area.
- Store the pump and filter tank in a dry, frost-free location.
- The valve has an anti-freeze function to prevent damage in cold weather.
6. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your sand filter pump.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Low Water Flow / Low Pressure | Clogged strainer basket; dirty filter media; air in the system; pump not primed; kinked hoses. | Clean strainer basket; backwash/rinse filter; check for air leaks and prime pump; straighten hoses. |
| Water Leaks | Loose connections; damaged O-rings/gaskets; improper use of Teflon tape. | Tighten all connections; inspect and replace O-rings/gaskets if damaged; reapply Teflon tape on threaded fittings. |
| Cloudy Pool Water | Insufficient filtration time; dirty filter media; improper chemical balance; incorrect filter media type. | Increase filtration time; backwash/rinse filter; test and adjust pool chemicals; ensure correct sand type (0.8-1.5mm) or use filter balls. (Note: Some users reported issues with filter balls and preferred sand). |
| Pump Not Starting | No power; motor overheating; impeller jammed. | Check power supply and circuit breaker; allow motor to cool; inspect impeller for obstructions. |
