4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
The SZ308 Multimeter requires one 9V battery (not included). To install the battery:
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the multimeter.
- Use a screwdriver to remove the screw securing the cover (if present).
- Gently slide or lift the cover to open the compartment.
- Connect the 9V battery to the battery clips, ensuring correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).
- Place the battery inside the compartment and replace the cover, securing it with the screw.
4.2 Connecting Test Leads
To prepare the multimeter for measurements:
- Insert the black test lead into the 'COM' (Common) jack.
- Insert the red test lead into the 'VΩmA' jack for voltage, resistance, and small current measurements. For high current (up to 10A), insert the red test lead into the '10A' jack.
- Ensure the connections are firm and secure before taking any measurements.

5. Operating Instructions
Always ensure the multimeter is set to the correct function and range before making any measurements. Incorrect settings can damage the device or lead to inaccurate readings.
5.1 Measuring AC/DC Voltage
- Connect the red test lead to the 'VΩmA' jack and the black test lead to the 'COM' jack.
- Turn the rotary switch to the desired AC Voltage (V~) or DC Voltage (V-) range. Start with the highest range if the voltage is unknown.
- Connect the test probes in parallel to the circuit or component you wish to measure.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.

Figure 5.1: Measuring AC voltage with the multimeter.
5.2 Measuring AC/DC Current
- For currents up to 200mA, connect the red test lead to the 'VΩmA' jack. For currents up to 10A, connect the red test lead to the '10A' jack. The black test lead remains in 'COM'.
- Turn the rotary switch to the appropriate AC Current (A~) or DC Current (A-) range.
- Important: Connect the multimeter in series with the circuit. Break the circuit and insert the multimeter so that the current flows through it.
- Read the current value on the LCD display.
5.3 Measuring Resistance
- Connect the red test lead to the 'VΩmA' jack and the black test lead to the 'COM' jack.
- Turn the rotary switch to the 'Ω' (Resistance) range.
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance.
- Connect the test probes across the component whose resistance you want to measure.
- Read the resistance value on the LCD display.
5.4 Diode and Buzzer (Continuity) Test
- Connect the red test lead to the 'VΩmA' jack and the black test lead to the 'COM' jack.
- Turn the rotary switch to the diode/buzzer symbol.
- For diode test: Place the red probe on the anode and the black probe on the cathode. The display will show the forward voltage drop. Reverse the probes to check for open circuit.
- For continuity test: Place the probes across the circuit or component. If there is continuity (low resistance), the buzzer will sound.
5.5 Data Hold Function
The multimeter features a data hold function to freeze the current reading on the display. Press the 'HOLD' button (if available, or refer to specific button on your model) to activate/deactivate this function. This is useful for taking readings in hard-to-reach areas.
5.6 LCD Backlight Display
The LCD backlight can be activated for better visibility in dimly lit environments. Press the 'LIGHT' or backlight button (if available, or refer to specific button on your model) to turn the backlight on or off. The backlight may automatically turn off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life.
6. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your multimeter.
6.1 Cleaning
Wipe the multimeter casing with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the device is completely dry before storage or next use.
6.2 Storage
When not in use for extended periods, remove the battery to prevent leakage and corrosion. Store the multimeter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
6.3 Battery Replacement
If the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the 9V battery as soon as possible to ensure accurate readings and proper operation. Refer to Section 4.1 for battery installation instructions.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your multimeter, refer to the common problems and solutions below:
- No Display / Faint Display:
- Check if the battery is installed correctly.
- Replace the 9V battery if it is low or depleted.
- Ensure the power switch is in the 'ON' position.
- Inaccurate Readings:
- Verify that the function and range are correctly selected for the measurement.
- Ensure test leads are properly connected and not damaged.
- Check for external interference or strong magnetic fields.
- Replace the battery if it is low, as low voltage can affect accuracy.
- No Continuity Beep:
- Ensure the multimeter is set to the continuity (buzzer) function.
- Check if the circuit or component has high resistance (open circuit).
- Verify test lead integrity.
- Overload Indication ('OL'):
- The measured value exceeds the selected range. Switch to a higher range.
- Ensure you are not attempting to measure current in parallel or voltage in series, which can cause overload.
8. Safety Information
To ensure safe operation and prevent personal injury or damage to the multimeter, please observe the following safety precautions:
- Always adhere to local and national safety codes.
- Do not exceed the maximum input values specified for each range.
- Ensure the function switch is in the correct position before making any measurement.
- Never measure voltage on a circuit with the function switch set to current, resistance, or diode.
- Be cautious when working with live circuits. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as insulated gloves and safety glasses.
- Do not use the multimeter if it appears damaged or if the test leads are frayed or broken.
- Avoid using the multimeter in wet environments or in the presence of explosive gases or dust.
- Always disconnect power to the circuit and discharge any high-voltage capacitors before measuring resistance or continuity.
