Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the proper use, maintenance, and care of your NOLAN N120-1 Classic Flip-Up Helmet. Please read this manual thoroughly before using your helmet to ensure maximum safety and to prolong the life of your product. The N120-1 is a versatile Lexan™ polycarbonate flip-back helmet, designed for both full protection and open-face freedom, featuring a unique single-pivot chin guard rotation mechanism.
This helmet is 100% Made in Italy and is UN/ECE 22-06 certified, including P/J homologation, allowing use in both full-face (P) and open-face (J) configurations.
Safety Information
Your safety is paramount. Always wear your helmet correctly and ensure it is properly fastened before riding. A helmet cannot protect against all possible impacts. Always ride responsibly and adhere to all traffic laws.
- Ensure the chin strap is securely fastened and adjusted to fit snugly under your chin.
- Never modify your helmet. Any modification can compromise its protective capabilities.
- Avoid exposing the helmet to extreme temperatures or harsh chemicals, which can damage the shell and internal components.
- If the helmet sustains an impact, even if no visible damage is present, it should be replaced immediately. The structural integrity may be compromised.
- Always use the helmet with the visor down when riding at speed to protect your eyes from debris and wind.
Setup
1. Sizing and Fit
A properly fitting helmet is crucial for safety. The helmet should fit snugly around your head without causing pressure points. It should not move freely when you shake your head.

Figure 1: NOLAN Helmet Size Guide. This chart provides head circumference measurements in centimeters for various NOLAN helmet models, including the N120-1, to help determine the correct size (XXS to XXXL).
Refer to the size chart (Figure 1) and measure your head circumference to find the appropriate size. If unsure, consult an authorized dealer.
2. Chin Strap Adjustment
The chin strap must be adjusted correctly to ensure the helmet stays in place during an impact.
- Place the helmet on your head and pull the chin strap through the D-rings or quick-release buckle system.
- Tighten the strap until it is snug under your chin. You should be able to fit no more than one finger between the strap and your chin.
- Ensure the strap is not twisted.
Operating Instructions
1. Flip-Up Mechanism (Chin Guard Rotation)
The N120-1 features a unique flip-back chin guard, allowing it to transform from a full-face to an open-face helmet. This mechanism is designed for reliability and ease of use.

Figure 2: Side view of the NOLAN N120-1 helmet, showing the pivot mechanism for the chin guard. The chin guard can rotate backward for open-face configuration.
- To open the chin guard: Locate the release button/lever, typically found on the front lower edge of the chin guard. Press the button and rotate the chin guard upwards and backward until it locks into the open position.
- To close the chin guard: Press the release button/lever again (if required) and pull the chin guard down and forward until it securely latches into the closed, full-face position. Ensure it clicks firmly into place.
- Important: Always ensure the chin guard is fully locked in either the open or closed position before riding. The P/J homologation allows riding with the chin guard open, but always consider riding conditions and local regulations.
2. Visor Operation
The helmet is equipped with a clear outer visor and an internal sun visor.
- Outer Visor: To open or close, gently lift or lower the visor using the tab provided. It has multiple detent positions.
- Internal Sun Visor: Operate the sun visor using the slider mechanism, usually located on the left side of the helmet. Slide it down to deploy the sun visor and up to retract it.
- Note: Do not use the internal sun visor in low light conditions or at night.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Helmet Shell
Clean the helmet shell with a soft cloth and mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or petroleum-based products, as these can damage the polycarbonate material and finish.
2. Cleaning the Visors
The outer and inner visors should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth and lukewarm water. For stubborn dirt, use a specialized helmet visor cleaner. Do not use paper towels or rough cloths, as they can scratch the visor surface.
3. Interior Padding Care
The interior padding is often removable for cleaning. Refer to the specific instructions for your helmet model. Typically, padding can be hand-washed with mild soap and air-dried. Ensure it is completely dry before reinserting.
4. Chin Strap Cleaning
Clean the chin strap with a damp cloth and mild soap. Allow it to air dry completely.
5. Storage
Store your helmet in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use a helmet bag to protect it from dust and scratches.
Troubleshooting
- Visor Fogging: Ensure proper ventilation. If the helmet has a Pinlock® anti-fog insert, ensure it is correctly installed and sealed. Clean the visor thoroughly.
- Chin Guard Not Latching: Check for any obstructions around the pivot mechanism or latching points. Ensure the mechanism is clean. Do not force it. If the issue persists, consult an authorized dealer.
- Excessive Wind Noise: Ensure the visor is fully closed and sealed. Check that all vents are properly closed if not needed. A proper fit is essential to minimize wind noise.
- Helmet Feels Loose After Use: Re-check the chin strap adjustment. If the padding has compressed significantly, consider replacing the interior comfort padding or consulting a dealer for a better fit.
