CTCSS/DCS (Sub-codes)
The RB48 supports CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) and DCS (Digitally Coded Squelch) sub-codes. These codes allow for more private conversations by filtering out unwanted transmissions from other radios not using the same sub-code. Both radios must be on the same channel and sub-code to communicate.
Radio Range Considerations
The Retevis RB48 radios are designed for effective communication in various settings:
- Building Coverage: Up to 300,000 square feet or 25 floors.
- Open Terrain: Range can vary significantly based on obstacles and terrain.
Factors affecting radio range include terrain (mountains, hills), obstacles (buildings, dense foliage), atmospheric conditions, and antenna quality. The RB48's robust design and features like shock resistance and waterproofing contribute to its reliability in challenging environments.

- Cleaning: Regularly wipe the radio's surface with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Battery Care: The 2000mAh lithium battery provides about 20 hours of continuous use and 100 hours of standby. For best battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. Store radios in a cool, dry place when not in use for extended periods.
- Inspection: Periodically check the antenna, PTT buttons, and charging ports for any signs of damage or wear.
Troubleshooting
- No Power: Ensure the battery is charged. Check if the power/volume knob is turned on.
- No Sound/Poor Audio: Adjust the volume knob. Verify that both radios are on the same channel and sub-code (CTCSS/DCS). Check for obstacles blocking the signal.
- Limited Range: Range can be affected by terrain, buildings, and other obstacles. Move to a higher or more open location if possible. Ensure batteries are fully charged.
- Buttons Not Responding: Check if the Key-Lock function is activated. Deactivate it if necessary.
