Model: Grind (0718-ACI)

1. Introduction

The Behringer Grind is a semi-modular hybrid multi-engine synthesizer designed for sound exploration and creation. It combines digital oscillators with an analog filter, offering a wide range of sonic possibilities for musicians and sound designers.

Key features include:

  • 24 Digital Oscillators
  • 10 Percussion/Noise Engines
  • Analog Ladder Filter with Low-Frequency Oscillator (LFO)
  • 32-step Sequencer
  • 14 Synth Engines

2. Setup

  1. Power Connection: Connect the provided power adapter to the DC input on the rear panel of the Grind and then to a suitable power outlet.
  2. Audio Output: Connect the audio output (e.g., 1/4" jack) from the Grind to your mixer, audio interface, or amplifier using an appropriate audio cable.
  3. MIDI Connection (Optional): For external control, connect a MIDI cable from your MIDI controller or computer interface to the MIDI IN port on the Grind. The MIDI THRU port can be used to daisy-chain other MIDI devices.
  4. Patching (Optional): For semi-modular functionality, use patch cables to connect various modules on the front panel. Refer to the "Operating" section for patching examples.
  5. Power On: Once all connections are secure, press the POWER button to turn on the unit.

3. Operating the Synthesizer

3.1 Oscillators

The Grind features 24 digital oscillators and 14 synth engines, providing a diverse palette of sounds. Adjust the TIMBRE, HARMONICS, FREQUENCY, and MORPH controls in the OSCILLATOR section to shape the fundamental sound. The BANK and MODEL selectors allow you to choose different oscillator types and characteristics.

3.2 Filter (VCF)

The analog ladder filter (VCF) section allows for dynamic sound sculpting. Use the CUTOFF knob to control the filter's frequency, and RESONANCE to emphasize frequencies around the cutoff point. The MODE switch selects different filter types. The integrated LFO can be routed to modulate the filter cutoff for evolving textures.

3.3 Envelopes (ADS)

The ENVELOPE section provides controls for ATTACK, DECAY, and SUSTAIN, allowing you to shape the amplitude contour of your sound. These parameters determine how quickly a sound reaches its peak, how long it takes to decay, and its sustained level.

3.4 Sequencer

The 32-step sequencer enables the creation of rhythmic patterns and melodic phrases. Use the TEMPO/GATE LENGTH knob to adjust the speed and duration of steps. Buttons for HOLD/REST, RESET/ACCENT, ARP/PATTERN, PLAY/STOP, and REC provide comprehensive control over sequence playback and recording. The OCTAVE/LOCATION indicators show the current step and octave.

3.5 Patching

The semi-modular design allows for extensive patching possibilities using 3.5mm patch cables. Connect various inputs and outputs on the top panel to reroute signals and create complex modulations. Experiment with connecting LFOs to oscillator parameters, envelopes to filter cutoff, or external control voltages for unique sound design.

4. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the synthesizer in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Handling: Handle with care to prevent damage to knobs, switches, and patch points.

5. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible Solution
No sound output
  • Check power connection and ensure the unit is turned on.
  • Verify audio cables are correctly connected to the output and your listening device.
  • Ensure volume controls on the Grind and your listening device are turned up.
  • Check patch connections; incorrect patching can mute sound.
MIDI not responding
  • Confirm MIDI cable is connected to MIDI IN.
  • Check MIDI channel settings on both the Grind and your controller.
  • Ensure your MIDI controller is sending data.
Unexpected sound behavior
  • Reset the unit to factory defaults (refer to advanced manual for procedure).
  • Review patch cable connections for unintended routings.
  • Ensure all knobs are in desired positions.
