Setup

1. Placement

Optimal subwoofer placement is crucial for achieving the best bass performance in your listening environment. Consider the following:

  • Corner Placement: Often provides the most output and can reduce standing waves, but may result in boomy bass if not properly calibrated.
  • Front of Room Placement: Placing the subwoofer near the front speakers can create a more seamless soundstage.
  • Mid-Wall Placement: Can offer a good balance of output and accuracy.
  • Subwoofer Crawl: A common technique involves placing the subwoofer in your primary listening position and crawling around the room to find where the bass sounds best. This location is often ideal for the subwoofer itself.

2. Connections

The PB17-Ultra offers various connection options. For most home theater setups, a single LFE (Low-Frequency Effects) connection from your AV receiver is recommended.

  • LFE Input: Connect a single RCA cable from the LFE/Subwoofer output of your AV receiver to the LFE input on the PB17-Ultra. This is the most common and recommended connection for home theater systems.
  • Stereo RCA Inputs: For 2-channel stereo systems without an LFE output, connect RCA cables from the stereo pre-outs of your pre-amplifier or receiver to the Left and Right RCA inputs on the subwoofer.
  • XLR Inputs: For professional or high-end setups, balanced XLR inputs are available for a robust, low-noise connection.

3. Power Connection

Once all audio connections are made, connect the supplied power cable to the AC inlet on the rear of the subwoofer and then to a grounded electrical outlet. The PB17-Ultra is designed for 120 Volts input.

Operating Your SVS PB17-Ultra

Basic Operation

After connecting the subwoofer, power it on using the main power switch on the rear panel. The subwoofer features an auto-on/standby mode, which will activate the subwoofer when an audio signal is detected and place it in standby after a period of inactivity.

SVS Subwoofer Control Smartphone App

The SVS PB17-Ultra can be fully controlled and optimized using the SVS Subwoofer Control smartphone app, available for iOS and Android devices. This app provides access to advanced features and settings, including:

  • Volume Control: Adjust the subwoofer's output level.
  • Low Pass Filter: Set the crossover frequency to blend the subwoofer seamlessly with your main speakers.
  • Phase Control: Adjust the phase to ensure bass waves from the subwoofer align with those from your main speakers.
  • Parametric EQ (PEQ): Utilize the 6-band parametric equalizer to fine-tune the frequency response and address room anomalies.
  • Room Gain Compensation: Adjust for excessive room gain at low frequencies.
  • Custom Presets: Save and recall custom settings for different listening modes (e.g., Music, Movie, Custom).

SVS Auto Room Correction

The PB17-Ultra features SVS Auto Room Correction, which, when used with an outboard microphone (not included with the subwoofer, typically part of an AV receiver's calibration kit), helps to optimize the subwoofer's performance for your specific room acoustics. Follow the instructions provided by your AV receiver's calibration system for this process.

Maintenance

The SVS PB17-Ultra is designed for long-term reliability with minimal maintenance. Follow these guidelines to keep your subwoofer in optimal condition:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the cabinet. For piano gloss finishes, use a microfiber cloth to avoid scratches. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the rear amplifier panel has adequate airflow. Do not block the ventilation openings.
  • Environment: Avoid exposing the subwoofer to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or direct sunlight.
  • Power: Unplug the subwoofer from the power outlet during lightning storms or if it will be unused for extended periods.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your SVS PB17-Ultra, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

Problem Possible Cause Solution
No Sound from Subwoofer
  • Power cable not connected or outlet is off.
  • Subwoofer not powered on.
  • Input cables loose or incorrect.
  • AV receiver/processor settings incorrect (e.g., subwoofer output disabled, volume too low).
  • Check power cable connection and wall outlet.
  • Ensure power switch on rear panel is ON.
  • Verify all audio cables are securely connected to the correct inputs.
  • Check your AV receiver's speaker setup menu to ensure the subwoofer output is enabled and its volume is adequate. Run auto-calibration if available.
Boomy or Muddy Bass
  • Subwoofer placement issues.
  • Incorrect crossover or phase settings.
  • Room acoustics.
  • Experiment with different subwoofer placements (e.g., away from corners).
  • Adjust the Low Pass Filter and Phase settings using the SVS app or rear panel controls.
  • Utilize the SVS app's Parametric EQ to address specific room modes. Consider room treatments.
Distortion at High Volumes
  • Subwoofer volume too high.
  • Input signal clipping.
  • Reduce the subwoofer's volume level.
  • Check the output level from your AV receiver/processor; ensure it's not sending an overdriven signal.
