Introduction
The Catalinbread Varioboost is a versatile preamplifier pedal designed to enhance and shape your guitar tone. It offers precise frequency control for EQ adjustments and a unique pre-boost soft-clipping circuit, providing a wide range of tonal possibilities from subtle boosts to rich saturation.
Key Features
- Guitar Preamplifier Pedal with Frequency Control
- Soft-clipping Pre Control for added tonal character
- Up to 12dB of frequency-specific cut or boost
Controls and Functions
The Varioboost pedal features several controls to dial in your desired sound. Refer to the image below for control placement.

Figure 1: Top view of the Catalinbread Varioboost Preamplifier Pedal, illustrating the layout of its control knobs and footswitch.
- FREQ Knob: This control allows you to select a specific frequency range between 70Hz and 1.4kHz. Once a frequency is selected, the LEVEL knob will either boost or cut that specific frequency by up to 12dB.
- LEVEL Knob: Adjusts the gain of the selected frequency. Turning it clockwise boosts the frequency, while turning it counter-clockwise cuts it. The center detent provides a neutral setting.
- PRE Knob: Controls the amount of soft-clipping applied before the frequency boost circuit. Increasing this knob introduces a raunchier, more saturated tone.
- POST Knob: Functions as the master volume control for the pedal's output. Use this to set the overall output level of the Varioboost.
- Footswitch: Engages or bypasses the Varioboost effect.
Setup
- Power Connection: The Varioboost pedal operates on a standard 9V DC power supply (center-negative). It can also be powered by a 9V battery. Connect the power supply to the 9V DC input jack.

- Audio Connections:
- Connect your instrument (e.g., guitar) to the INPUT jack on the right side of the pedal.
- Connect the OUTPUT jack on the left side of the pedal to your amplifier or the next pedal in your signal chain.
- Initial Settings: For a starting point, set the Freq, Pre, and Post knobs to their middle positions, and the Level knob to its center detent.
Operating the Varioboost
The Varioboost can be used in various ways to shape your sound:
- EQ Sculpting: Use the Freq and Level knobs to precisely boost or cut specific frequencies. This is useful for tailoring your tone to different instruments, amplifiers, or room acoustics. For example, cutting lower mids can tighten up a muddy sound, while boosting upper mids can help your guitar cut through a mix.
- Clean Boost: With the Pre knob set low, use the Post knob to increase your overall signal level without adding significant distortion. This can push the front end of your amplifier for natural overdrive or simply provide a volume lift for solos.
- Saturated Boost: Increase the Pre knob to introduce soft-clipping before the frequency boost. This adds harmonic richness and a raunchier character to your tone, suitable for driving an amplifier into further saturation or for standalone mild overdrive.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal's enclosure. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Battery Replacement: If using battery power, replace the 9V battery when the pedal's performance degrades or the indicator light dims. To access the battery compartment, remove the screws on the bottom plate.
- Storage: Store the pedal in a dry environment away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight when not in use.
Troubleshooting
- No Sound:
- Ensure all cables (instrument, amplifier, power) are securely connected.
- Verify the power supply is functioning correctly and providing 9V DC (center-negative).
- If using a battery, check if it needs replacement.
- Test with different cables and a different power supply if possible.
- Unwanted Noise/Hum:
- Ensure you are using a regulated, isolated power supply.
- Check for faulty cables.
- Move the pedal away from other electronic devices that might cause interference.
