5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Making Espresso

Figure 5.1: The compact design of the CHULUX Slim Espresso Machine, only 5.5 inches wide, fits well in any kitchen.
- Preheat: Ensure the machine is plugged in and the water tank is filled. Press the Power button (⏻). Wait for the indicator lights to stop flashing and become solid, indicating the machine is preheated (approx. 30 seconds).
- Prepare Portafilter:
- Choose the 1-cup or 2-cup filter basket and place it into the portafilter.
- Add desired amount of finely ground espresso coffee into the filter basket. For a single shot, use about 7-8g; for a double shot, use about 14-16g.
- Use the tamper to press the coffee grounds firmly and evenly. Ensure the surface is level.
- Wipe any excess coffee grounds from the rim of the portafilter.
- Attach Portafilter: Align the portafilter with the brew head and twist it firmly to the right until it is securely locked in place. The "Filter Must Be Fully Locked" indicator should be clear.
- Brew Espresso:
- Place your pre-warmed cup(s) under the portafilter spouts.
- Press the single shot button (☕) for a single espresso or the double shot button (☕☕) for a double espresso.
- The machine will automatically stop when the programmed volume is reached. You can also manually stop by pressing the button again.
- Observe the pressure gauge during brewing; it should ideally be in the "Espresso Range" for optimal extraction.
- Remove Portafilter: Once brewing is complete, carefully twist the portafilter to the left to remove it. Be cautious as it may still be hot.

5.2 Using the Steam Wand (Milk Frothing)
The powerful steam wand allows you to create creamy microfoam for lattes and cappuccinos.
- Prepare Milk: Fill a stainless steel frothing pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) to just below the spout.
- Activate Steam: Press the steam button (☁) on the control panel. The indicator light will flash, then become solid when the steam function is ready.
- Purge Wand: Before frothing, place an empty cup under the steam wand and briefly turn the steam knob to release any condensed water. Turn the knob back to OFF.
- Froth Milk:
- Insert the steam wand tip just below the surface of the milk in the pitcher.
- Slowly turn the steam knob to activate steam.
- Lower the pitcher slightly to introduce air, creating foam. Once desired foam is achieved, submerge the wand deeper to heat the milk.
- Continue heating until the milk reaches desired temperature (approx. 140-150°F / 60-65°C). The pitcher will become hot to the touch.
- Stop Steaming: Turn the steam knob back to the OFF position, then press the steam button (☁) to deactivate the steam function.
- Clean Wand Immediately: Wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth immediately after use to prevent milk residue from drying. Briefly purge the wand again to clear any internal milk.

5.3 Hot Water Function
The steam wand can also dispense hot water for tea or Americanos.
- Ensure the machine is preheated.
- Place a cup under the steam wand.
- Turn the steam knob to the hot water icon (☁, usually the same as steam, but without activating the steam button). The machine will dispense hot water.
- Turn the knob back to OFF when desired amount of hot water is dispensed.
6. Maintenance and Cleaning
Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your espresso machine.
6.1 Daily Cleaning
- Portafilter and Filter Baskets: After each use, remove spent coffee grounds and rinse the portafilter and filter baskets under running water. Use a brush to remove any stubborn residue.
- Steam Wand: As mentioned in section 5.2, wipe the steam wand immediately after frothing milk with a damp cloth. Purge the wand briefly to clear any internal milk residue.
- Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray daily or when the red indicator floats up.
- Water Tank: Rinse the water tank daily and refill with fresh water.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
6.2 Descaling
Descaling is essential to remove mineral buildup and maintain machine performance. The machine has a descaling reminder. Frequency depends on water hardness.
- Prepare Descaling Solution: Mix a descaling solution (e.g., citric acid or commercial descaler) with water according to the product instructions. Fill the water tank with this solution.
- Run Descaling Cycle:
- Place a large container under the brew head and steam wand.
- Turn on the machine. Once preheated, run about half of the descaling solution through the brew head by pressing the single shot button.
- Then, turn the steam knob to release the remaining solution through the steam wand.
- Turn off the machine and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the solution to work.
- Rinse Cycle: Empty and rinse the water tank thoroughly. Fill it with fresh, clean water. Run 2-3 full tanks of clean water through both the brew head and steam wand to rinse out any descaling solution residue.
