GREEN STOVE Hori 5 Pellet Stove with Oven - Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the GREEN STOVE Hori 5 Pellet Stove with Oven. This portable wood and pellet burning stove is designed for outdoor use, providing efficient heating and cooking capabilities for camping, hiking, hot tent setups, and other outdoor adventures. Constructed from durable stainless steel, it features a unique U-shaped interior design for enhanced heat retention and an integrated oven for versatile cooking. Please read this manual thoroughly before assembly and operation to ensure safe and optimal performance.

2. Safety Information

  • Outdoor Use Only: This stove is designed exclusively for outdoor use or in well-ventilated structures like hot tents with proper chimney ventilation. Never use indoors without adequate ventilation.
  • Clearance to Combustibles: Maintain a safe distance from all combustible materials (tents, sleeping bags, foliage, etc.). Consult your tent manufacturer for specific clearance requirements if used in a hot tent.
  • Hot Surfaces: The stove surfaces become extremely hot during operation. Use heat-resistant gloves when handling and keep children and pets away.
  • Proper Fuel: Use only dry wood or wood pellets as fuel. Do not use gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid, or other volatile materials.
  • Stable Surface: Always place the stove on a stable, non-combustible, and level surface.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the chimney pipes are correctly assembled and extend sufficiently above the tent or shelter to allow for proper draft and smoke exhaust.
  • Ash Disposal: Allow the stove to cool completely before removing ash. Dispose of ash in a metal container away from combustible materials.

4. Setup

Follow these steps to assemble your GREEN STOVE Hori 5:

  1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all parts from the carrying bag.
  2. Deploy Legs: Unfold the stove's legs and ensure they are securely locked into position, providing a stable base.
  3. Assemble Chimney: Connect the chimney pipe sections, ensuring a tight fit. Attach the regulating tube and spark arrestor to the top.
  4. Connect Chimney to Stove: Securely attach the assembled chimney to the stove body's exhaust port. Ensure the flexible pipe is properly connected and sealed.
  5. Install Pellet Box (if using pellets): Mount the large pellet box (hopper) onto the designated slot on the stove. Ensure it is stable and correctly aligned for pellet feeding.
  6. First Burn (Curing): Before initial use for cooking or in a tent, perform a curing burn outdoors with a small amount of fuel for at least 30 minutes. This burns off manufacturing oils and coatings, which can produce odors and smoke.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Fueling the Stove (Wood or Pellets)

The Hori 5 stove supports both wood and pellet fuel. The U-shaped interior design maximizes heat retention and efficiency.

Pellet Mode:

  1. Ensure the pellet box (hopper) is securely installed.
  2. Fill the pellet box with wood pellets.
  3. Open the air intake damper to allow sufficient airflow for ignition.
  4. Ignite a small amount of pellets in the combustion chamber using a fire starter or torch.
  5. Once ignited, adjust the pellet feed rate using the control mechanism on the hopper and the air intake damper to achieve desired flame and heat output. A full load of pellets can provide 5 to 10 hours of burn time depending on settings.

Wood Mode:

  1. Remove the pellet box if installed.
  2. Open the main combustion chamber door.
  3. Place small pieces of dry wood into the chamber. Do not overfill.
  4. Ignite the wood using a fire starter.
  5. Close the door and adjust the air intake damper to control the burn rate.

5.2 Heat Control

The stove's heat output can be regulated by adjusting the air intake damper and, in pellet mode, the pellet feed rate. More airflow and pellets generally result in a hotter, faster burn. Reduce airflow and pellet feed for a slower, longer burn.

5.3 Cooking Functionality

The GREEN STOVE Hori 5 is equipped for both top-surface cooking and oven baking.

  • Top Surface Cooking: The flat top surface of the stove can be used for boiling water, frying, or simmering food in pots and pans.
  • Integrated Oven: The bottom section includes an oven, perfect for baking or warming food. Monitor the temperature using the integrated thermometer.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficient operation of your stove.

  • Ash Removal: After each use and once the stove has completely cooled, remove ash from the combustion chamber and ash pan. Use the provided ash scraper tool.
  • Chimney Cleaning: Periodically inspect and clean the chimney pipes to prevent creosote buildup, which can reduce draft and pose a fire hazard.
  • Pellet Cage: The pellet cage is a consumable part. Prolonged burning with strong flames may cause it to melt or deform over time. If damaged, it needs to be purchased separately. Inspect it regularly for wear.
  • General Inspection: Before and after each trip, inspect all components for damage, loose connections, or excessive wear. Replace any damaged parts immediately.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your stove, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Poor Draft / Excessive Smoke
  • Chimney blockage (creosote, debris)
  • Improper chimney assembly or leaks
  • Insufficient air intake
  • Wet fuel
  • Clean chimney pipes thoroughly.
  • Ensure all chimney sections are tightly connected and sealed.
  • Open air intake damper fully during ignition.
  • Use only dry wood or pellets.
Low Heat Output
  • Insufficient fuel
  • Restricted air intake
  • Damp fuel
  • Pellet feed rate too low (pellet mode)
  • Add more fuel.
  • Ensure air intake damper is open.
  • Use dry fuel.
  • Increase pellet feed rate.
Difficulty Igniting
  • Wet fuel
  • Insufficient kindling/starter
  • Lack of airflow
  • Use dry, small kindling or fire starters.
  • Ensure air intake is open.
  • Pre-heat the flue if necessary by holding a small flame near the chimney opening for a few seconds.
Pellet Cage Damage
  • Prolonged high heat exposure
  • Manufacturing defect
  • Reduce maximum heat settings for extended periods.
  • Contact customer support for replacement parts if damaged.
