Behringer RS 9

Behringer RS-9 Rhythm Sequencer Eurorack Module

User Manual

1. Introduction

The Behringer RS-9 is a 52HP Eurorack rhythm sequencer module designed to provide comprehensive control over drum machines and other rhythmic elements in your modular setup. It features 10 drum channels, 10 trigger/accent outputs, 1 CV output, and supports up to 64 steps per sequence with pattern and song modes. This manual provides detailed instructions for setup, operation, and maintenance of your RS-9 module.

2. Safety Instructions

  • Power Supply: Ensure the module is connected to a compatible Eurorack power supply that meets the required voltage and current specifications. Incorrect power can damage the module.
  • Environment: Operate the module in a dry environment, away from moisture, extreme temperatures, and direct sunlight.
  • Handling: Handle the module with care. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to strong impacts.
  • Servicing: Do not attempt to service the module yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.

3. Setup

3.1 Eurorack Mounting

The RS-9 is a 52HP Eurorack module. To install, align the module with an available 52HP space in your Eurorack case. Connect the ribbon cable from your Eurorack power supply to the module's power connector, ensuring the red stripe on the ribbon cable aligns with the -12V pin on both the power supply and the module. Secure the module with the provided screws.

3.2 Initial Connections

After mounting, connect your drum modules or other sound sources to the RS-9's trigger and accent outputs. Use standard 3.5mm Eurorack patch cables. For MIDI synchronization, connect a MIDI cable to the MIDI IN port. For USB MIDI, connect a USB cable to your computer or host device.

4.5 Step Buttons (1-16)

The 16 large buttons are used for step programming. Each button corresponds to a step in the sequence. They also have secondary functions indicated by text below them, such as MIDI, VCD, CLOCK, MAD, DDEES, CV, DOLV, DAND, PRAR, FLAM, PPT, 1/8, 1/8T, 1/16, 1/16T, 1/32. These secondary functions are typically accessed by holding down a shift or function button (not explicitly labeled in OCR but common for such modules) and pressing the step button.

4.6 Input/Output Ports

  • IN / OUT (3.5mm jacks): General purpose input/output jacks for various control signals.
  • CV IN: Control Voltage input for external modulation.
  • RESET IN: Input for an external reset signal to restart the sequence.
  • MIDI IN / OUT (DIN connectors): Standard MIDI input and output for synchronization and control with external MIDI devices.

5. Basic Operation

5.1 Powering On/Off

Ensure the module is correctly installed in your Eurorack case and the power supply is connected. Power on your Eurorack case. The RS-9 will power on automatically. To power off, simply power down your Eurorack case.

5.2 Setting Tempo

The tempo can be set using the main tempo knob or by pressing the TAP button multiple times. The current tempo will be displayed on the LED screen. You can also select external sync sources (MIDI, USB, TRIG) via the SYNC section.

5.3 Creating a Basic Pattern

  1. Press the PATTERN button to enter Pattern mode.
  2. Select an empty pattern slot (if available) or an existing pattern to edit.
  3. Press the STEP button to enter Step mode.
  4. Select a drum channel (e.g., by pressing a corresponding track button if available, or cycling through channels).
  5. Press the 1-16 step buttons to activate or deactivate triggers for that channel at specific steps.
  6. Use the ACCENT button to add accents to steps.
  7. Press the Play/Pause button to hear your pattern.
  8. Press SAVE to store your pattern.

6. Advanced Features

6.1 Pattern and Song Modes

The RS-9 allows you to create multiple patterns and chain them together into songs. In PATTERN mode, you can select, edit, copy, and erase individual patterns. In SONG mode, you can arrange patterns in a specific order to create longer sequences or full tracks.

6.2 Synchronization Options

The SYNC section provides flexible timing options:

  • INT (Internal): The RS-9 uses its own internal clock.
  • MIDI: Synchronizes to an external MIDI clock received via the MIDI IN port or USB.
  • USB: Synchronizes to an external clock received via the USB connection.
  • TRIG: Synchronizes to an external trigger pulse.

Adjust SWING to add a rhythmic feel and PROB (Probability) to introduce variations in trigger playback. FLAM adds a quick double-trigger effect.

6.3 Trigger and Accent Outputs

The 10 dedicated trigger and accent outputs allow for precise control over individual drum sounds. The accent outputs provide a higher voltage pulse, which can be used by compatible drum modules to create dynamic variations in sound.

6.4 CV Output

The single CV output can be assigned to control various parameters within the RS-9 or sent to other Eurorack modules for modulation. Consult the settings menu for CV assignment options.

7. Maintenance

The Behringer RS-9 requires minimal maintenance. Keep the module clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure all connections are secure and free from dust. Periodically check for firmware updates on the Behringer website to ensure optimal performance and access to new features.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No Power: Check Eurorack power supply connection and ensure the red stripe on the ribbon cable is correctly aligned. Verify your Eurorack case is powered on.
  • No Sound/Triggers: Ensure patch cables are correctly connected from RS-9 outputs to drum module inputs. Verify drum modules are powered and configured correctly. Check that patterns are programmed and the sequencer is playing.
  • Incorrect Tempo/Sync Issues: Verify the selected sync source (INT, MIDI, USB, TRIG) matches your setup. If using external sync, ensure the external device is sending a clock signal.
  • Buttons Unresponsive: Try restarting the module by powering off and on your Eurorack case. If issues persist, contact support.
