5.1 Oscillators (VCO-1 & VCO-2)
The MS-5 is equipped with two Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCOs) that generate the primary sound. Each VCO offers selectable waveforms and pitch control.
- Waveforms: Select between Triangle, Ramp, Square, and Pulse waveforms. The Pulse Width control allows for dynamic timbre changes on the Square/Pulse wave.
- Pitch: Adjust the pitch of each VCO independently.
- Sync: Synchronize VCO-2 to VCO-1 for harmonic rich sounds.
5.2 Voltage Controlled Filter (VCF)
The VCF shapes the tonal characteristics of the sound. The MS-5 features a versatile 4-pole/1-pole VCF.
- Frequency: Controls the cutoff point of the filter.
- Resonance: Emphasizes frequencies around the cutoff point, creating a "wah" effect at higher settings.
- Envelope Modulation: The VCF can be modulated by the ADSR envelope for dynamic filter sweeps.
5.3 Envelopes (AR & ADSR)
Two envelopes are available to control the amplitude (VCA) and filter (VCF) over time.
- AR Envelope: Attack and Release controls for simpler amplitude shaping.
- ADSR Envelope: Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release controls for more complex amplitude and filter modulation.
5.4 Low Frequency Oscillators (LFO-1 & LFO-2)
The two LFOs provide modulation sources for various parameters, adding movement and expression to your sounds.
- Rate: Adjusts the speed of the LFO.
- Waveforms: Selectable waveshapes for different modulation characteristics.
- Destinations: LFOs can be routed to modulate pitch, filter cutoff, and pulse width.
5.5 Mixer, Ring Mod, and Noise Generator
- Mixer: Blends the levels of VCO-1, VCO-2, Ring Mod, and Noise Generator before they enter the VCF.
- Ring Mod: Multiplies the frequencies of two input signals (VCO-1 and VCO-2) to create metallic, inharmonic tones.
- Noise Generator: Adds white noise for percussive sounds, wind effects, or to thicken existing patches.
5.6 USB Connectivity
The USB port allows the MS-5 to function as a MIDI controller and receive MIDI data from a computer or other MIDI devices. This enables integration with Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) for sequencing and automation.
5.7 External Input
The external input allows you to process external audio signals through the MS-5's filter and VCA sections, expanding its utility beyond internal sound generation.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
To clean the synthesizer, use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by a dry cloth.
6.2 Storage
When not in use for extended periods, store the MS-5 in a dry, dust-free environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Consider using a dust cover to protect the keys and controls.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Behringer MS-5, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound output | Power off, cables loose, volume low, VCA/VCF settings. | Ensure power is on. Check all audio cables. Increase main volume and VCA level. Adjust VCF cutoff and resonance. |
| MIDI not working | Incorrect USB connection, driver issues, DAW settings. | Verify USB cable connection. Check computer's device manager for driver status. Ensure correct MIDI input is selected in your DAW. |
| Unresponsive controls | Firmware issue, temporary glitch. | Power cycle the unit. Check Behringer's website for firmware updates. |
If the problem persists, please contact Behringer customer support.
