4.3. Mounting the Amplifier

Choose a mounting location that is dry, well-ventilated, and secure. Ensure there is sufficient space around the amplifier for airflow, especially around the heatsink fins. Avoid mounting on carpet or in enclosed spaces without ventilation.

  1. Place the amplifier in the desired mounting location and mark the screw holes.
  2. Drill pilot holes if necessary, ensuring no wires or fuel lines are behind the drilling surface.
  3. Secure the amplifier using the provided mounting screws.

4.4. Wiring Connections

Proper wiring is crucial for performance and safety. Use high-quality wiring and ensure all connections are secure.

  1. Power Wire (+12V): Run a heavy gauge power wire (e.g., 4 AWG) directly from the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery to the +12V terminal on the amplifier. Install an appropriate fuse holder (not supplied) within 18 inches (45 cm) of the battery.
  2. Ground Wire (GND): Connect a heavy gauge ground wire (e.g., 4 AWG) from the GND terminal on the amplifier to a clean, unpainted metal surface of the vehicle chassis. The ground point should be as short as possible, ideally less than 3 feet (1 meter).
  3. Remote Turn-On Wire (REM): Connect a smaller gauge wire (e.g., 18 AWG) from the head unit's remote output to the REM terminal on the amplifier. This wire turns the amplifier on and off with the head unit.
  4. RCA Signal Input: Connect RCA cables from your head unit's subwoofer pre-out to the "Low Input" RCA jacks on the amplifier.
  5. Speaker Output: Connect your subwoofer(s) to the "Speaker Output" terminals. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). This amplifier is 1 Ohm stable. Refer to your subwoofer's impedance for proper wiring configuration.
  6. Remote Bass Control: Connect the remote bass control to the "Remote" port on the amplifier. Mount the control in an accessible location for easy adjustment.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Initial Setup and Adjustment

After installation, follow these steps to set up your amplifier:

  1. Gain Setting:
    • Turn the amplifier's Gain control to its minimum (fully counter-clockwise) position.
    • Set your head unit's volume to about 75% of its maximum.
    • Play a dynamic music track.
    • Slowly increase the amplifier's Gain control until you hear distortion, then back it off slightly.
  2. Low Pass Filter (LPF): Adjust the LPF to filter out high frequencies from the subwoofer. A common starting point is 80-100 Hz.
  3. Subsonic Filter: Set the subsonic filter to protect your subwoofer from playing frequencies below its resonant frequency, which can cause damage. A common setting is 20-30 Hz.
  4. Bass Boost: Use the Bass Boost sparingly. Start at 0dB and increase gradually if more bass impact is desired. Excessive bass boost can cause distortion and damage.
  5. Phase: Experiment with the 0° and 180° phase settings to find the one that provides the most cohesive bass response with your front speakers.
  6. Remote Bass Control: Use the remote control to adjust the subwoofer's output level from the driver's seat.

6. Maintenance

The EDGE DBX Series amplifier is designed for reliable operation with minimal maintenance. Follow these guidelines to ensure its longevity:

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the heatsink fins remain clear of dust and debris to maintain proper cooling.
  • Connections: Occasionally check all power, ground, and speaker connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.
  • Environment: Avoid exposing the amplifier to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or excessive moisture.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience problems with your amplifier, refer to the following troubleshooting guide:

  • Test head unit with another amplifier or speakers.
Distorted Sound
  • Gain set too high.
  • Speaker impedance too low.
  • Poor ground connection.
  • Damaged speaker.
  • Reduce gain.
  • Verify speaker impedance is within amplifier's limits (1 Ohm minimum).
  • Improve ground connection.
  • Test speaker with another amplifier.
Amplifier Goes into Protection Mode (Protect LED On)
  • Overheating.
  • Speaker short circuit.
  • Speaker impedance too low.
  • DC offset.
  • Allow amplifier to cool down; check ventilation.
  • Check speaker wiring for shorts.
