PACUM GM998

PACUM GM998 Coating Thickness Gauge User Manual

Model: GM998

1. Introduction

The PACUM GM998 Coating Thickness Gauge is a precision instrument designed for non-destructive measurement of coating thickness on metallic substrates. It can accurately measure the thickness of non-magnetic coatings (e.g., paint, film, plastic, enamel, paper, chrome, copper, zinc) on magnetic substrates (Fe - iron, steel) and insulating coatings on non-magnetic conductive substrates (NFe - aluminum, copper, brass, non-magnetic stainless steel). This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper use, calibration, and maintenance of your device.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The GM998 gauge requires batteries for operation (batteries not included in package).

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  2. Open the cover and insert the required batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

4.2 Powering On/Off

  • To power on the device, press the ON/OFF button.
  • To power off the device, press the ON/OFF button again. The device may also automatically power off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Measurement Modes (SNG/CON)

The GM998 offers two measurement modes:

  • Single Measurement Mode (SNG): In this mode, the device takes a single measurement each time the probe is placed on the surface. The reading is held on the display until a new measurement is initiated.
  • Continuous Measurement Mode (CON): In this mode, the device continuously takes measurements as the probe is moved across the surface. The display updates in real-time.

To switch between SNG and CON modes, press the MODE/RESET button. The active mode icon will be displayed on the screen.

5.2 Unit Switching (µm/mil)

To switch the unit of measurement between micrometers (µm) and mils (mil), press the µm/mil button. The selected unit will be displayed.

5.3 Performing a Measurement

  1. Ensure the device is powered on and the desired measurement mode (SNG or CON) and unit (µm or mil) are selected.
  2. Place the probe gently and perpendicularly onto the coated surface to be measured.
  3. The device will automatically detect the substrate type (Fe or NFe) and display the coating thickness.
  4. Lift the probe from the surface to complete the measurement (in SNG mode) or continue moving the probe for real-time readings (in CON mode).

5.4 Calibration

Calibration ensures the accuracy of your measurements. It is recommended to perform calibration periodically or if you suspect inaccurate readings.

5.4.1 Zero Calibration

Zero calibration is performed on an uncoated substrate to establish a baseline.

  1. Place the probe directly onto an uncoated, clean magnetic (Fe) or non-magnetic (NFe) substrate.
  2. Press and hold the CALIB/ZERO button for 3 seconds.
  3. The "ZERO" indicator will appear on the display, confirming successful zero calibration.

5.4.2 Multi-Points Calibration

Multi-point calibration uses standard foils to calibrate the device across a range of thicknesses.

  1. Press the CALIB/ZERO button (short press) to enter Calibration Mode. The "CALIB" indicator will appear.
  2. Place a standard foil of known thickness onto an uncoated substrate.
  3. Place the probe onto the standard foil.
  4. Use the ON/OFF (Down Key) and µm/mil (Up Key) buttons to adjust the displayed reading to match the known thickness of the standard foil.
  5. Repeat for other standard foils if necessary to cover the desired measurement range.
  6. Press the CALIB/ZERO button again to exit Calibration Mode.

5.5 Factory Default Resetting

To restore the device to its original factory settings, including calibration data:

  • Press and hold the MODE/RESET button for 3 seconds.
  • The device will reset, and all custom calibration settings will be cleared.

6. Maintenance

  • Keep the device clean and free from dust, dirt, and moisture. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Avoid dropping the device or subjecting it to strong impacts.
  • Store the device in a dry environment at moderate temperatures.
  • Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the device yourself. Contact qualified service personnel if needed.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1 Inaccurate Readings

  • Ensure the probe is clean and free of debris.
  • Perform Zero Calibration and Multi-Points Calibration as described in Section 5.4.
  • Verify that the substrate is clean and flat.
  • Check battery level; low batteries can affect performance.

7.2 Device Does Not Power On

  • Check if batteries are installed correctly with proper polarity.
  • Replace old or depleted batteries with new ones.

7.3 Display Issues

  • If the display is dim, replace the batteries.
  • If the display shows error codes, try performing a factory reset (Section 5.5).
