5. Setup
5.1 Unpacking and Placement
- Carefully remove the turntable and all accessories from the packaging. Retain packaging for future transport.
- Place the turntable on a stable, level surface, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and strong vibrations.
5.2 Platter and Belt Installation
- Place the platter onto the center spindle.
- Locate the drive belt, typically found around the inner rim of the platter or separately in the packaging.
- Carefully stretch the drive belt around the motor pulley, which is usually a small brass or plastic cylinder near the spindle. Use the provided ribbon or your fingers to guide the belt without twisting it.
- Place the felt mat on top of the platter.

5.3 Tonearm and Cartridge Setup
The Ortofon 2M RED cartridge is pre-installed on the headshell. Follow these steps to balance the tonearm and set the tracking force and anti-skating.
- Balance the Tonearm:
- Remove the stylus protector from the cartridge.
- Place the anti-skating weight on its support.
- Release the tonearm clamp.
- Rotate the counterweight at the rear of the tonearm until the tonearm floats freely and is perfectly level.
- Once balanced, hold the counterweight steady and rotate only the numbered ring until '0' aligns with the line on the tonearm.
- Set Tracking Force:
- The recommended tracking force for the Ortofon 2M RED cartridge is 1.8 grams.
- Rotate the counterweight (including the numbered ring) counter-clockwise until the indicator points to 1.8.
- Set Anti-skating:
- The anti-skating force should generally match the tracking force.
- Adjust the anti-skating dial or mechanism to the corresponding value (e.g., 1.8).
5.4 Audio Connections
- RCA Output: Connect the supplied RCA cable to the L/R outputs on the turntable and to the corresponding inputs on your amplifier or receiver.
- PHONO/LINE Switch:
- If your amplifier has a dedicated PHONO input, set the turntable's switch to PHONO.
- If your amplifier has only LINE/AUX inputs, set the turntable's switch to LINE to use the built-in pre-amplifier.
- Ground Terminal: If your amplifier has a ground terminal, connect a ground wire from the turntable's ground terminal to the amplifier's ground terminal to minimize hum.
- USB-PC Output: To digitize your vinyl, connect a USB cable (not included) from the USB-PC port on the turntable to your computer.
5.5 Power Connection
- Connect the DC 12V power adapter to the "DC IN 12V" port on the rear of the turntable.
- Plug the adapter into a suitable wall outlet.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Power On/Off
Press the POWER button located on the top panel to turn the turntable on or off. An indicator light will illuminate when the unit is powered on.
6.2 Speed Selection
Rotate the SPEED SELECTOR knob to choose between 33 RPM (for LPs) or 45 RPM (for singles and EPs). Ensure the correct speed is selected for the record you are playing.
6.3 Playing a Record
- Place a record on the platter, ensuring it is centered.
- Select the appropriate playback speed (33 or 45 RPM).
- Rotate the START/STOP knob to the "START" position. The platter will begin to rotate.
- Gently lift the tonearm using the cueing lever.
- Position the tonearm over the desired track on the record.
- Slowly lower the cueing lever to gently place the stylus onto the record groove.
- To stop playback, lift the tonearm using the cueing lever, return it to the tonearm rest, and rotate the START/STOP knob to the "STOP" position.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Cleaning the Turntable
- Always unplug the turntable from the power outlet before cleaning.
- Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the dust cover, plinth, and platter.
- Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or chemical sprays, as these can damage the finish.
7.2 Stylus Care
- A clean stylus is crucial for optimal sound quality and record longevity.
- Use a soft stylus brush (not included) and gently brush the stylus from back to front (in the direction of the tonearm pivot). Do not brush from side to side.
- Replace the stylus when you notice a degradation in sound quality or after approximately 1000 hours of playback, whichever comes first. Refer to Ortofon's guidelines for specific stylus replacement procedures for the 2M RED.
7.3 Drive Belt
The drive belt is a wear item. If you notice inconsistent speed or the platter not spinning, the belt may need to be cleaned or replaced. Consult the manufacturer's website or a qualified technician for replacement belts.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power | Power adapter not connected; outlet not active. | Ensure power adapter is securely connected to the turntable and a working wall outlet. |
| No sound or low volume | Incorrect PHONO/LINE switch setting; RCA cables loose; amplifier input incorrect; stylus protector still on. | Check PHONO/LINE switch matches amplifier input. Ensure RCA cables are firmly connected. Select correct input on amplifier. Remove stylus protector. |
| Distorted sound | Dirty or worn stylus; incorrect tracking force or anti-skating; dirty record. | Clean stylus. Re-adjust tracking force and anti-skating. Clean record. |
| Platter not spinning or inconsistent speed | Drive belt dislodged or worn; speed selector incorrect. | Check and re-seat the drive belt. Ensure correct speed (33 or 45 RPM) is selected. |
| Humming noise | Ground wire not connected; interference. | Connect the ground wire between the turntable and amplifier. Move turntable away from other electronic devices. |
