3. Product Overview

The NETGEAR GS308EPP is an 8-port Gigabit Ethernet switch with PoE+ capabilities, offering a total power budget of 123W. It features a compact design suitable for desktop placement or wall-mounting.

3.1 Front Panel

NETGEAR GS308EPP Front Panel

Image 1: Front view of the NETGEAR GS308EPP switch, showing 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports with PoE+ support, Power LED, PoE Max LED, and a Reset button. Each port has dual LEDs indicating link speed and activity, and PoE status.

The front panel includes 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports, each supporting Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+). Status LEDs provide visual feedback on power, PoE budget utilization, link speed, and activity for each port.

  • Power LED: Indicates the power status of the switch.
  • PoE Max LED: Illuminates when the total PoE power budget is nearing its limit.
  • Port LEDs (Left): Green for 1000Mbps, Yellow for 100Mbps/10Mbps. Blinking indicates activity.
  • Port LEDs (Right): Green for PoE Powered, Yellow for PoE Fault.
  • Reset Button: Used to reset the switch to factory default settings.

3.2 Rear Panel

The rear panel typically contains the power input connector and a Kensington lock slot for security.

4. Setup

4.1 Physical Installation

The GS308EPP switch can be placed on a desktop or mounted on a wall.

  • Desktop Placement: Ensure adequate ventilation around the switch. Do not block ventilation holes.
  • Wall Mounting: Use the provided mounting kit. Securely attach the mounting bracket to a suitable wall surface, then attach the switch to the bracket.

4.2 Power Connection

  1. Connect the power adapter to the power input port on the rear of the switch.
  2. Plug the other end of the power adapter into a standard electrical outlet.
  3. Verify that the Power LED on the front panel illuminates.

4.3 Network Connection

Connect your network devices to the Gigabit Ethernet ports on the front panel.

  • For non-PoE devices (e.g., computers, routers), use standard Ethernet cables.
  • For PoE-powered devices (e.g., IP cameras, VoIP phones, wireless access points), connect them directly to any of the 8 ports. The switch will automatically detect and provide power if the device is PoE compatible and within the 123W total power budget.
  • Observe the port LEDs to confirm link status and activity.

5. Operating the Switch

5.1 Basic Operation

The NETGEAR GS308EPP is a plug-and-play device for basic network connectivity. Once powered on and connected, it will automatically forward data between connected devices at Gigabit speeds.

5.2 Managed Features

As a managed switch, the GS308EPP offers advanced configuration options through its intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI). These features allow for optimized network performance and security.

NETGEAR GS308EPP Software Configuration Interface

Image 3: Screenshot of the NETGEAR Plus Switches Software Configuration & Control interface, showing options for QoS, VLAN, Multicast, and Link Aggregation. The VLAN section is highlighted, indicating options for activating VLAN mode.

  • VLAN Control: Configure Virtual Local Area Networks to segment your network, enhancing security and managing traffic flow. This allows for creating separate broadcast domains.
  • Quality of Service (QoS): Prioritize network traffic to ensure critical applications (e.g., VoIP, video streaming) receive sufficient bandwidth, reducing latency and jitter.
  • Traffic Monitoring: Monitor network usage and performance to identify bottlenecks or potential issues.
  • Link Aggregation: Combine multiple network connections to increase throughput and provide redundancy.

5.3 PoE+ Power Management

The switch provides advanced control over its PoE+ ports, allowing for efficient power allocation and management of connected devices.

NETGEAR GS308EPP PoE Port Control Interface

Image 4: Screenshot illustrating the PoE port control feature, showing a graphical representation of power allocation and options to manage individual PoE ports. This includes allocating power levels, power cycling, and maintaining power during reboots.

  • Allocate Power Level per Port: Assign specific power budgets to individual ports within the total 123W PoE budget.
  • Power Cycle Individual PoE Ports: Remotely restart connected PoE devices by cycling power to their respective ports.
  • Maintain Uninterrupted Power: Ensure continuous power delivery to PoE devices during switch soft reboots or firmware updates.
PoE Power Compatibility Chart

Image 5: A table illustrating the power capabilities of PoE, PoE+, and PoE++ standards, showing typical devices supported by each. PoE provides up to 15W per port, PoE+ up to 30W per port, and PoE++ up to 60W per port.

The GS308EPP supports PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at), providing up to 30W per port, with a total budget of 123W. This is suitable for a wide range of devices including IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points.

6. Maintenance

  • Firmware Updates: Regularly check the NETGEAR support website for the latest firmware updates to ensure optimal performance and security. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the switch. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust.
  • Environmental Conditions: Operate the switch within recommended temperature and humidity ranges to prevent damage.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No Power: Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to both the switch and a working electrical outlet. Check the Power LED.
  • No Link on Port: Verify that the Ethernet cable is properly connected at both ends. Check the cable for damage. Ensure the connected device is powered on and functioning correctly.
  • PoE Device Not Powering On: Check the PoE Max LED. If it's illuminated, the total power budget might be exceeded. Disconnect some PoE devices or ensure the device requires less than 30W. Verify the device is PoE compatible.
  • Slow Network Speed: Check port LEDs to confirm Gigabit link (Green LED). Ensure all connected devices and cables support Gigabit Ethernet.
  • Accessing Management Interface: Refer to the NETGEAR documentation for the default IP address and login credentials to access the web-based management interface.
  • Factory Reset: If issues persist, press and hold the Reset button for several seconds (refer to specific product documentation for exact duration) to restore factory default settings. Note that this will erase all custom configurations.
