Operating Instructions

Initial Use and Backflushing

Before using the water softener for the first time, or after a period of storage, it is crucial to backflush the unit to prepare the resin for optimal performance.

  1. Connect the unit as described in the "Setup and Installation" section.
  2. Ensure the water supply is turned off.
  3. Orient the unit to the "Backflush" position (refer to markings on the unit head).
  4. Slowly turn on the water supply, allowing water to flow through the unit in reverse. This flushes out any fine particles or air from the resin bed.
  5. Continue backflushing until the water runs clear, typically for 5-10 minutes.
  6. Turn off the water supply and re-orient the unit to the "Service" position for normal operation.

Regeneration Process

The water softener requires regeneration when its softening capacity is depleted. This is typically indicated by a return of hard water symptoms (e.g., soap not lathering, water spots). The unit regenerates using common table salt.

  1. Turn off the water supply to the softener.
  2. Disconnect the outlet hose from your RV/application.
  3. Remove the top cap of the softener unit.
  4. Add approximately 2 lbs (half a standard box) of non-iodized table salt into the unit.
  5. Replace the top cap securely.
  6. Orient the unit to the "Regenerate" position (refer to markings).
  7. Slowly turn on the water supply, allowing water to flow through the unit. This will dissolve the salt and flush the resin.
  8. Allow the regeneration process to complete, which typically takes 30 minutes.
  9. After regeneration, turn off the water supply and re-orient the unit to the "Service" position.
  10. Reconnect the outlet hose to your RV/application.
  11. Flush the system for 4-6 minutes to remove any residual salt taste before normal use.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your water softener:

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe down the exterior of the unit with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Storage: If storing the unit for an extended period, ensure it is regenerated and then drained completely. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and freezing temperatures.
  • O-rings: Inspect O-rings for wear or damage periodically. Replace if necessary to prevent leaks. A fiber cloth and spare O-rings are included for convenience.
  • Resin: The unit uses NSF certified food-grade premium resin. While designed for durability, proper regeneration and backflushing are key to maintaining its effectiveness.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Water is still hard after softening.Unit needs regeneration; insufficient salt during regeneration; improper regeneration process; resin bed fouled.Perform a full regeneration cycle with the correct amount of salt. Ensure the unit is in the "Regenerate" position during the process. If issues persist, perform multiple regeneration cycles or a thorough backflush.
Low water flow.Unit is clogged; inlet/outlet hoses kinked; internal filter blocked.Perform a backflush to clear any blockages. Check hoses for kinks. Inspect internal components for debris.
Water has a salty taste.Insufficient flushing after regeneration.Flush the unit for an extended period (10-15 minutes) after regeneration until the salty taste is gone.
Leaks at connections.Loose connections; damaged O-rings; insufficient PTFE tape.Tighten connections. Inspect and replace O-rings if damaged. Reapply PTFE tape to threaded connections.
