1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation of your Champion Power Equipment 201299 5500-Watt Portable Generator. This generator is designed to provide backup power for essentials during outages or for use during camping trips and projects. 2. Safety Information

• Carbon Monoxide Hazard: Generators produce carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. Using a generator indoors CAN KILL YOU IN MINUTES. CO Shield technology monitors CO accumulation and automatically shuts off the engine if unsafe levels are detected. However, CO Shield is not a substitute for an indoor carbon monoxide alarm or for safe operation.
• ALWAYS use outdoors: Operate the generator outdoors only, far away from occupied buildings. Point engine exhaust away from people and buildings. Never operate in an enclosed area, even with ventilation.
• Electrical Safety: Do not operate the generator in wet conditions. Ensure all connections are secure and use appropriate extension cords. The Volt Guard built-in surge protector helps prevent overloads.
• Fuel Safety: Gasoline is highly flammable. Store fuel in approved containers and in a well-ventilated area. Do not refuel while the engine is running or hot.
• Hot Surfaces: The generator's engine and muffler become very hot during operation and remain hot for a period after shutdown. Avoid contact to prevent burns.

3. Setup

Before first use, some assembly and preparation are required.

3.1 Unpacking and Assembly

• Remove the generator and all components from the packaging.
• Attach the wheel kit (included). Follow the instructions provided in the separate assembly guide for proper installation.
• Attach the support feet.

3.2 Adding Engine Oil

• Ensure the generator is on a level surface.
• Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick.
• Using the included oil funnel, add 1.2 quarts of 10W-30 engine oil. Do not overfill.
• Replace the oil fill cap/dipstick securely. The low oil shut-off sensor will prevent the engine from starting or running if the oil level is too low.

3.3 Adding Fuel

• Use clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher.
• Ensure the engine is off and cool before refueling.
• Open the fuel cap and carefully fill the 7.7-gallon fuel tank. Do not fill above the fuel filter.
• Securely close the fuel cap.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Starting the Generator

• Place the generator on a flat, outdoor surface, away from windows and doors.
• Ensure the fuel valve is in the "ON" position.
• Move the choke lever to the "CHOKE" position (if the engine is cold).
• Turn the engine switch to the "ON" position.
• Pull the recoil start handle firmly and steadily until the engine starts.
• Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the "RUN" position.

4.2 Connecting Electrical Loads

• Allow the generator to run for a few minutes to stabilize.
• Plug in your appliances or extension cords into the appropriate outlets. The generator features a 120/240V 23A locking outlet (L14-30R) and two 120V 20A GFCI household duplex outlets (5-20R).
• Do not overload the generator. Refer to the "Calculating Wattage" section for guidance.
• The Volt Guard system protects against voltage spikes.

4.3 Stopping the Generator

• Disconnect all electrical loads from the generator.
• Allow the generator to run for a few minutes without load to cool down.
• Turn the engine switch to the "OFF" position.
• Turn the fuel valve to the "OFF" position for storage.

5.1 Calculating Wattage

To avoid overloading your generator, it is important to calculate the total wattage required by your appliances. This involves summing the running watts of all items and adding the highest single starting watt of any item.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Engine Oil Change

• Change the engine oil after the first 5 hours of operation, then every 50 hours or annually thereafter.
• Ensure the engine is warm to allow oil to drain easily.
• Place a drain pan under the oil drain plug.
• Remove the oil drain plug and oil fill cap/dipstick to allow oil to drain completely.
• Replace the drain plug and refill with 1.2 quarts of 10W-30 engine oil.

6.2 Air Filter Inspection and Cleaning

• Inspect the air filter every 50 hours or annually.
• Clean or replace the air filter as needed.

6.3 Spark Plug Inspection

• Inspect the spark plug every 100 hours or annually.
• Clean or replace if necessary, ensuring proper gap.
