1. Setup

1.1 Battery Installation

The PROSTER T58B Multimeter requires three (3) AAA batteries for operation, which are included in the package. To install or replace batteries:

  1. Ensure the multimeter is powered off and disconnect all test leads.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  3. Use a screwdriver to open the battery compartment.
  4. Insert the three AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.

1.2 Connecting Test Leads

Proper connection of test leads is crucial for accurate and safe measurements.

  • Always connect the black test lead to the 'COM' (Common) jack.
  • For most measurements (Voltage, Resistance, Capacitance, Frequency, Diode, Continuity, Temperature), connect the red test lead to the 'VΩmA' jack.
  • For high current measurements (up to 10A), connect the red test lead to the '10A' jack.

2. Operating Instructions

2.1 General Measurement Principles

The PROSTER T58B Multimeter features 9999 counts and True-RMS for accurate readings. It operates primarily in auto-ranging mode, automatically selecting the correct measurement range. The LED lights on the jacks will illuminate according to the selected function on the dial, guiding correct lead placement. A built-in flashlight assists in dark environments, and the upper right corner of the screen can simultaneously display frequency and temperature.

2.2 Voltage Measurement (AC/DC)

To measure voltage:

  1. Set the rotary dial to the 'V~' for AC voltage or 'V=' for DC voltage range.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the 'COM' jack and the red test lead to the 'VΩmA' jack.
  3. Touch the test probes to the points where you want to measure voltage. The reading will appear on the display.
  4. In AC voltage measurement, press the 'PEAK' button to quickly capture peak values.

2.3 Current Measurement (AC/DC)

To measure current:

  1. Set the rotary dial to the 'A~' for AC current or 'A=' for DC current range.
  2. For currents less than 400mA, connect the red test lead to the 'VΩmA' jack. For currents between 400mA and 10A, connect the red test lead to the '10A' jack. Always connect the black test lead to 'COM'.
  3. Connect the multimeter in series with the circuit you wish to measure.
  4. The current reading will be displayed. If the reading is inaccurate, try connecting the red test lead to the µA and mA terminal in sequence. Incorrect connection can damage the fuse or meter.

2.4 Resistance Measurement

To measure resistance:

  1. Set the rotary dial to the 'Ω' (Ohms) range.
  2. Connect the black test lead to 'COM' and the red test lead to 'VΩmA'.
  3. Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized before connecting the probes.
  4. Touch the test probes across the component or circuit to measure its resistance.

2.5 Capacitance Measurement

To measure capacitance:

  1. Set the rotary dial to the '∔' (Capacitance) range.
  2. Connect the black test lead to 'COM' and the red test lead to 'VΩmA'.
  3. Discharge the capacitor completely before testing to avoid damage to the meter or component.
  4. Touch the test probes across the capacitor. The capacitance value will be displayed.

2.6 Frequency and Duty Cycle Measurement

To measure frequency or duty cycle:

  1. Set the rotary dial to the 'Hz%' (Frequency/Duty Cycle) range.
  2. Connect the black test lead to 'COM' and the red test lead to 'VΩmA'.
  3. Connect the probes to the signal source. The frequency or duty cycle will be displayed.

2.7 Temperature Measurement

To measure temperature:

  1. Set the rotary dial to the '°C/°F' (Temperature) range.
  2. Connect the temperature probe (thermocouple) to the 'COM' and 'VΩmA' jacks, observing polarity.
  3. Place the tip of the temperature probe on or in the object whose temperature you wish to measure.
  4. The temperature reading will appear on the display in Celsius or Fahrenheit.

2.8 Diode and Continuity Test

To perform diode or continuity tests:

  1. Set the rotary dial to the 'Diode/Continuity' range.
  2. Connect the black test lead to 'COM' and the red test lead to 'VΩmA'.
  3. For diode test: Touch the probes across the diode. The forward voltage drop will be displayed.
  4. For continuity test: Touch the probes across the circuit or component. A beep indicates continuity (low resistance).

Video: This video demonstrates how to perform a continuity measurement using a digital multimeter. It shows connecting the probes and interpreting the results.

2.9 NCV (Non-Contact Voltage) Detection

To use the NCV function:

  1. Set the rotary dial to the 'NCV' range.
  2. Move the top part of the multimeter (NCV sensing area) close to the object or wire you suspect has AC voltage.
  3. The multimeter will emit an audible beep and the display will indicate the presence of AC voltage without direct contact.

3. Maintenance

3.1 Fuse Replacement

The PROSTER T58B Multimeter is equipped with double fuses for overload protection across all ranges. If the meter stops functioning correctly during current measurement, a fuse may have blown. The package includes two spare fuses.

  1. Ensure the multimeter is powered off and all test leads are disconnected.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device. The fuse compartment is typically located behind this cover.
  3. Use a screwdriver to open the battery/fuse compartment.
  4. Carefully remove the blown fuse and replace it with a new fuse of the correct rating (refer to specifications for fuse ratings).
  5. Replace the cover and secure it with the screw.

4. Troubleshooting

4.1 'OL' or 'Over Range' Display

If the multimeter displays 'OL' (Overload) or 'Over Range' during a measurement, it indicates that the measured value exceeds the current selected range. To resolve this:

  • If the meter is in manual ranging mode, you must manually select a higher range to obtain a reading.
  • If the meter is in auto-ranging mode and still displays 'OL', the measured value is beyond the maximum capability of the device for that function. Ensure the correct measurement function is selected for the expected value.

4.2 Inaccurate Current Readings

If current readings appear inaccurate:

  • Verify that the red test lead is connected to the appropriate current jack ('VΩmA' for mA/µA or '10A' for higher currents).
  • Ensure the multimeter is connected in series with the circuit.
  • Check if the fuses are intact. A blown fuse will prevent current measurement.
