1. Introduction

The LAUNCH X431 PRO Star is an advanced automotive diagnostic scan tool designed for comprehensive vehicle system analysis, maintenance, and programming. This manual provides detailed instructions for setting up, operating, and maintaining your device to ensure optimal performance and accurate diagnostics.

2. What's in the Box

Verify that all items listed below are present in your package:

3. Setup

3.1 Initial Device Preparation

  1. Charge the Device: Connect the AC adapter to the scanner and a power outlet. Ensure the device is fully charged before first use.
  2. Power On: Press and hold the power button located on the side of the device until the screen illuminates.
  3. Language Selection: Follow the on-screen prompts to select your preferred language. The device supports 25+ languages.
  4. Wi-Fi Connection: Connect the device to a stable Wi-Fi network to enable software updates and online features.
  5. Registration and Activation: Create an account and register your device as prompted. This is necessary for updates and full functionality.
  6. Software Updates: After registration, navigate to the "Software Update" section and download all available updates to ensure your device has the latest vehicle coverage and features.

3.2 Connecting to a Vehicle

  1. Locate the OBD-II Port: The OBD-II port is typically located under the dashboard on the driver's side.
  2. Connect the Diagnostic Cable: Plug one end of the diagnostic cable into the scanner's D-shell port and the other end into the vehicle's OBD-II port.
  3. Turn On Vehicle Ignition: Turn the vehicle's ignition to the "ON" position (engine off).

4. Operating the Device

4.1 Intelligent Vehicle Identification (Auto VIN)

The Auto VIN feature automatically identifies vehicle information, streamlining the diagnostic process.

  1. From the main menu, select "Intelligent Diagnose".
  2. The device will attempt to connect to the VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) and read the VIN.
  3. Confirm the decoded VIN and vehicle information displayed on the screen.

4.2 Full System Diagnostics

Perform a comprehensive scan across all available vehicle systems to read and clear diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), view live data, and generate health reports.

  1. After vehicle identification, select "Diagnostic" or "System Scan".
  2. The device will scan all electronic control units (ECUs) such as Engine, Transmission, ABS, SRS, SAS, Chassis, HVAC, Fuel, Radio, and more.
  3. Review the health report, which provides an overview of system status and any detected DTCs.
  4. Select specific systems to view detailed information, freeze frame data, or live data streams.

4.3 Bi-Directional Control / Active Test

This function allows you to send commands to vehicle components to test their functionality directly, aiding in precise fault identification.

  1. From the diagnostic menu for a specific system, select "Actuation Test" or "Active Test".
  2. Choose the component you wish to test (e.g., ABS pump, fuel pump, windows, mirrors, lights, cooling fan).
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to activate or deactivate the component and observe its response.

4.4 ECU Coding

The ECU Coding function allows for matching, relearning, and coding new ECUs after repair or replacement. It also enables activation of high-end functions, disabling unwanted features, and personalizing vehicle settings.

4.5 Service Functions (Resets)

The device offers over 38 maintenance reset functions, covering a wide range of vehicle services:

4.6 IMMO / Anti-theft Programming

This feature allows for key programming and anti-theft system management, including reading PIN codes, adding new keys/fobs, anti-theft matching, remote learning, and disabling lost keys.

Note: This function is primarily for vehicles with easy IMMO systems and its availability varies by vehicle.

4.7 VAG Guided Functions

For Volkswagen Group vehicles (Volkswagen and Audi), the device provides professional guided functions with detailed operating instructions for automatic login, matching, settings, coding, and more.

4.8 Vehicle Compatibility and Protocols

The LAUNCH X431 PRO Star supports over 200,000 vehicles worldwide, including 12V sedans, SUVs, hybrids, and light-duty trucks. It is compatible with all standard OBDII, EOBD, and JOBD protocol vehicles.

4.9 Data Stream and Health Report

The device provides 8-in-1 live data graphing, allowing you to monitor multiple parameters simultaneously. The one-click health report scans all systems, reads and clears codes, and generates a detailed report that can be saved or shared.
