4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
The FR2000 series testers are powered by DC 6V (4 AA alkaline dry batteries).
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the instrument.
- Open the battery cover.
- Insert four (4) AA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery cover securely.
Note: Always use new, high-quality alkaline batteries for optimal performance. Remove batteries if the instrument will not be used for an extended period.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Basic Operation
- Power On/Off: Press the power button to turn the instrument on or off.
- Mode Selection: Use the MODE button to cycle through different measurement modes (e.g., resistance, current).
- Data Hold: Press the HOLD button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
- Memory Access: Use the MEM button to review stored data.
- Settings: The SET button allows for configuring parameters such as alarm thresholds.
5.2 Earth Resistance Measurement
The FR2000 series uses a clamp-on method for earth resistance measurement, which does not require auxiliary electrodes or disconnecting the grounding system. This makes it suitable for various applications including power distribution lines, tower transmission lines, gas stations, factory grounding grids, and lightning rods.
- Ensure the instrument is powered on and in the resistance measurement mode.
- Open the clamp jaws by pressing the trigger.
- Place the clamp around the grounding conductor to be measured. Ensure the jaws are fully closed and there is no gap.
- The resistance value will be displayed on the LCD screen.
- If an alarm is set, the instrument will alert if the measured value exceeds the threshold.
5.3 Multi-Point Grounding System Measurement
The instrument can be used to measure individual grounding resistances in a multi-point grounding system without disconnecting the system.

Image: Diagram illustrating the application of the clamp tester for measuring individual resistances (R1, R2, R3, R4) in a multi-point grounding system.
- Identify the individual grounding conductors within the multi-point system.
- Clamp the instrument around each individual grounding conductor (e.g., R1, R2, R3, R4 as shown in the diagram).
- Read the resistance value for each point directly from the display.
5.4 Leakage Current Measurement (FR2000C+ only)
For the FR2000C+ model, leakage current can also be measured.
- Switch the instrument to current measurement mode using the MODE button.
- Open the clamp jaws and place them around the conductor through which the leakage current is flowing.
- Ensure the jaws are fully closed.
- The leakage current value will be displayed.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
Regularly clean the instrument's casing with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Keep the clamp jaws free of dust and debris to ensure accurate readings.
6.2 Battery Replacement
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace all four AA batteries as described in Section 4.1. Always replace with new alkaline batteries.
6.3 Storage
Store the instrument in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
7. Troubleshooting
- "OL" Symbol Displayed: This indicates an overflow, meaning the measured value exceeds the instrument's range. Check the measurement setup or the condition of the circuit.
- "NOISE" Symbol Displayed: This indicates significant interference. Try to minimize external electrical interference or move to a different measurement location.
- No Display/Instrument Not Powering On: Check the batteries. Ensure they are correctly installed and have sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.
- Inaccurate Readings: Ensure the clamp jaws are fully closed and clean. Verify the measurement mode is correct for the intended test.
