5. Setup
5.1 Battery Installation
- Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the Emitter unit (Figure 3).
- Insert three 1.5V AA batteries, observing the correct polarity.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
- For the Receiver probe, open its battery compartment and insert one 9V battery, observing the correct polarity.
- Close the Receiver's battery compartment cover securely.
5.2 Initial Connection
Before performing any tests, ensure the device is powered on using the ON/OFF switch on both the Emitter and Receiver units.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Wire Tracking (Cable Tracing)
This function helps locate a specific cable among a bundle or trace its path.
- Connect the cable to be traced to the appropriate port on the Emitter unit (e.g., RJ45, RJ11, or use the alligator clips for bare wires).
- Switch the Emitter to 'SCAN' mode.
- Turn on the Receiver probe.
- Adjust the sensitivity knob on the Receiver.
- Move the tip of the Receiver along the suspected cable path. The Receiver will emit an audible tone when it detects the signal from the Emitter, indicating the presence of the traced cable.
- The tone will be loudest when directly over the cable.
Video 1: Demonstration of the PEAKMETER PM6816 Network Cable Tester's wire tracking function. The video shows how to connect a network cable to the emitter and use the receiver probe to detect the signal along the cable, indicating its location.
6.2 Cable Continuity Testing
This function checks for open circuits, short circuits, miswires, reversed pairs, and split pairs in network and telephone cables.
- Connect one end of the cable to the appropriate port on the Emitter unit (e.g., RJ45, RJ11).
- Connect the other end of the cable to the corresponding port on the Receiver unit.
- Switch the Emitter to 'CONT' mode.
- Press the 'TEST' button on the Emitter.
- Observe the LED indicators on the Emitter. They will light up sequentially, indicating the status of each wire pair.
- Specific LED patterns indicate different fault conditions (e.g., 'SHORT', 'MISWIRE', 'REVERSED', 'SPLIT PAIRS'). Refer to the Emitter's display for detailed fault identification.
6.3 Telephone Line Test
Identify the state of a working telephone line.
- Connect the telephone line to the RJ11 port on the Emitter.
- The Emitter can identify the line status (e.g., clear, ringing, busy).
6.4 Switch Port Collation
Detect the connected condition of a switch port.
- Connect the Emitter to a switch port.
- The device can indicate if the port is active and connected.
6.5 DC Level Test
Test line level, positive, and negative polarity.
- Use the appropriate connection (e.g., alligator clips) to test DC voltage levels and polarity.
