5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Making Espresso

For optimal results, use freshly roasted and ground coffee beans.

Infographic showing ideal parameters for perfect coffee: Water Temperature 194-205°F, Grouphead Pressure 9-12 bar, Coffee Grounds (Single shot: 9-12g, Double shots: 17-20g), Extraction Time 25±5s, Powder-to-liquid Ratio 1:2-2.5.

Figure 6: Parameters for perfect coffee extraction.

  1. Pre-heat: Ensure the machine is fully pre-heated (indicator lights solid). Place your espresso cup on the cup warming area.
  2. Prepare Portafilter: Insert the desired filter basket (single or double) into the portafilter.
  3. Grind Coffee: Grind fresh coffee beans to a fine consistency suitable for espresso.
  4. Dose Coffee: Fill the filter basket with the appropriate amount of ground coffee (9-12g for single, 17-20g for double).
  5. Tamp: Use a tamper to press the coffee grounds firmly and evenly into the basket. Ensure the surface is level.
  6. Attach Portafilter: Wipe any excess coffee from the rim of the portafilter. Insert the portafilter into the group head and twist firmly to lock it into place.
  7. Extract Espresso: Place your pre-warmed cup(s) under the portafilter spouts. Press the automatic extraction button for a standard shot, or the manual extraction button to control the volume manually. Monitor the pressure gauge for optimal extraction (typically 9-12 bar).
  8. Stop Extraction: If using manual extraction, press the manual extraction button again to stop the flow when the desired volume is reached (approx. 25-30 seconds for a double shot).
  9. Remove Portafilter: Carefully remove the portafilter by twisting it counter-clockwise. Dispose of the used coffee puck.

5.2 Steaming Milk

  1. Prepare Milk: Fill a stainless steel frothing pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) up to just below the spout.
  2. Activate Steam: Press the steam button. The indicator light will flash and then become solid when the steam function is ready.
  3. Purge Steam Wand: Briefly open the steam knob to release any condensed water from the wand. Close the knob.
  4. Froth Milk: Immerse the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk. Open the steam knob. Angle the pitcher to create a whirlpool effect. For foam, keep the tip near the surface; for hot milk, immerse it deeper.
  5. Monitor Temperature: Continue steaming until the milk reaches the desired temperature (around 140-150°F or 60-65°C). The pitcher will become hot to the touch.
  6. Stop Steaming: Close the steam knob, then remove the pitcher.
  7. Clean Steam Wand: Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue. Briefly open the steam knob again to purge any milk from inside the wand.

6. Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your espresso machine.

6.1 Daily Cleaning

  • Portafilter and Filter Baskets: After each use, remove the portafilter, discard the coffee puck, and rinse the portafilter and filter basket under hot water. Use the cleaning pad to remove any coffee residue.
  • Steam Wand: As described in the steaming section, wipe and purge the steam wand immediately after each use.
  • Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray daily or when the indicator floats up.
  • Water Tank: Rinse the water tank daily and refill with fresh water.
  • Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.

Always rinse the machine thoroughly with several tanks of fresh water after descaling.
