Setup

  1. Mounting: Select a suitable location for the GPS receiver. The mushroom housing is designed for outdoor use and should be mounted in a position with a clear, unobstructed view of the sky to ensure optimal satellite reception. Use the provided mounting base for secure installation.
  2. Cable Connection: The receiver comes with a 4-wire RS-232 connect cable. Identify the wires based on their colors:
    • Red: VCC (Power Supply, 12V)
    • Green: RX (Receive Data)
    • White: TX (Transmit Data)
    • Black: GND (Ground)
Connect these wires to your host device's corresponding RS-232 serial port. Ensure correct polarity for the power connections (Red to +12V, Black to Ground).
  3. Power Supply: Connect the Red (VCC) and Black (GND) wires to a stable 12V DC power source. Verify the power supply meets the receiver's voltage requirements to prevent damage.
  4. Serial Port Configuration: Configure the serial port on your host device (e.g., chartplotter, computer) to match the receiver's communication parameters:
    • Baud Rate: 4800 bps
    • Data Bits: 8
    • Parity: None
    • Stop Bits: 1

Operating Instructions

  1. Power On: Once all connections are secure and verified, apply power to the GPS receiver. The receiver will begin searching for available GPS and GLONASS satellites.
  2. Acquiring Satellite Lock: Allow a few minutes for the receiver to acquire a satellite lock. The time required for initial fix (TTFF) can vary depending on location, signal strength, and whether the receiver has a current almanac.
  3. Data Output: The receiver will automatically output NMEA 0183 standard data sentences (e.g., GPGGA, GPRMC) through the RS-232 TX line (White wire) at the configured baud rate (4800bps).
  4. Monitoring Data: Use appropriate software or hardware on your host device to read and interpret the incoming NMEA data. This data typically includes latitude, longitude, altitude, speed, course, time, and satellite status.
  5. Signal Quality: For optimal performance, ensure the receiver is not obstructed by large metal objects or structures that could block satellite signals.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the mushroom housing with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the casing.
  • Cable Inspection: Regularly inspect the connection cable for any signs of wear, fraying, or damage. Ensure all connections remain secure and free from corrosion, especially in marine environments.
  • Environmental Protection: While designed for outdoor use, avoid exposing the receiver to extreme temperatures outside its operating range or prolonged submersion in water.
  • Firmware Updates: Check the manufacturer's website (Beitian) for any available firmware updates. Follow the provided instructions carefully if an update is necessary.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No GPS data output.
  • No power to receiver.
  • Incorrect cable connection.
  • No satellite signal.
  • Incorrect serial port settings.
  • Verify 12V power supply to Red and Black wires.
  • Check Red (VCC), Green (RX), White (TX), Black (GND) connections.
  • Ensure clear view of the sky; relocate if necessary.
  • Confirm host device serial port settings (4800, 8, N, 1).
Inaccurate position data.
  • Poor satellite reception.
  • Interference.
  • Ensure receiver has an unobstructed view of the sky.
  • Move away from other electronic devices that may cause interference.
Receiver not recognized by host device.
  • Driver issues (if applicable).
  • Faulty serial port.
  • Install necessary drivers for your host device's serial port.
  • Test with a different serial port or host device.
