1. Introduction
The Ring Mailbox Sensor is a battery-powered motion sensor designed to notify you in real-time when your mailbox is opened. This device integrates with the Ring app and can connect via Amazon Sidewalk, eliminating the need for a separate hub in many cases. It also offers compatibility with Alexa-enabled devices for voice notifications. This manual provides instructions for installation, operation, and maintenance of your Ring Mailbox Sensor.
2. What's in the Box
Verify that all components are present before beginning installation:
- Ring Motion Sensor
- Mounting Bracket
- External Antenna
- Mounting Hardware (adhesive, wire routing accessories)
- User Manual (this document)
- Security Sticker
- 3 AAA-cell batteries
3. Setup and Installation
Installation typically takes 5-10 minutes. A power drill is not included but may be required for certain mailbox types.
- Prepare the Sensor: Insert the 3 AAA-cell batteries into the Ring Mailbox Sensor.
- Open the Ring App: Launch the Ring app on your smartphone or tablet. Follow the in-app instructions to add a new device and select the Ring Mailbox Sensor.
- Choose Mounting Location: The sensor should be mounted inside your mailbox. For metal mailboxes, the external antenna is required for optimal signal.
- Mount the Sensor: Use the included mounting hardware (adhesive tape) to secure the sensor inside the mailbox. Ensure the sensor has a clear view of the mailbox door's movement.
- Install External Antenna (for metal mailboxes): If you have a metal mailbox, attach the external antenna to the outside of the mailbox door. Route the antenna wire through a small gap or a drilled hole (if necessary) to connect it to the sensor inside. Use the wire routing accessories to keep the cable tidy.
- Connect to Amazon Sidewalk: The Mailbox Sensor connects with Amazon Sidewalk out of the box. If you have compatible Ring devices (like Ring Bridge or Alarm Pro Base Station, sold separately) or other Amazon Sidewalk-enabled devices, the sensor will utilize this network for extended range.
- Test the Sensor: Close and open your mailbox door to test the sensor. Verify that you receive a notification in the Ring app.

4. Operating Instructions
The Ring Mailbox Sensor is designed for simple, automated operation.
- Real-time Notifications: When the mailbox door is opened, the sensor detects motion and sends an immediate notification to your Ring app.
- Alexa Integration: If connected to an Alexa-enabled device, Alexa can announce when your mailbox has been opened. Configure this feature within the Alexa app.
- Motion Sensitivity: Adjust the motion detection sensitivity within the Ring app to suit your environment and prevent false alerts. The sensor has up to a 120° field of view and a 3-foot detection range.
- Device Linking: Link your Mailbox Sensor with other Ring Smart Lighting, Cameras, and Doorbells. This allows you to set up routines, such as turning on lights or starting camera recording when mailbox motion is detected.
5. Maintenance
The Ring Mailbox Sensor requires minimal maintenance.
- Battery Replacement: The sensor is powered by 3 AAA-cell batteries (included). Under normal use, the batteries can last up to 3 years. Battery life may vary based on device settings, usage frequency, and environmental factors. The Ring app will notify you when battery levels are low.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the sensor with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Ring Mailbox Sensor, consider the following:
- No Notifications:
- Check battery levels in the Ring app.
- Ensure the sensor is properly connected to Amazon Sidewalk or a Ring Bridge/Alarm Pro Base Station (if applicable).
- Verify app notification settings on your phone and within the Ring app.
- Confirm the sensor's placement allows for clear motion detection when the mailbox opens.
- False Alerts:
- Adjust motion sensitivity settings in the Ring app.
- Ensure the sensor is securely mounted and not shifting.
- Connectivity Issues:
- Ensure the external antenna is correctly installed for metal mailboxes.
- Confirm that your Amazon Sidewalk-enabled devices or Ring Bridge/Alarm Pro Base Station are within range and functioning correctly.
- Try repositioning the sensor or any nearby Sidewalk-enabled devices to improve signal strength.
