2. Setup

Before operating your Elna eXplore 120, ensure it is properly set up according to these instructions.

2.1 Unpacking and Placement

  1. Carefully remove the machine from its packaging. Retain all packaging materials for future transport or storage.
  2. Place the machine on a stable, flat surface. Ensure there is adequate space around the machine for fabric handling.
  3. Connect the foot controller to the machine's power input jack.
  4. Plug the power cord into a suitable electrical outlet.

2.3 Winding the Bobbin

  1. Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
  2. Guide the thread through the upper thread guide and around the bobbin winding tension disc.
  3. Place an empty bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle.
  4. Wind the thread a few times manually around the bobbin.
  5. Push the bobbin winder spindle to the right.
  6. Gently press the foot controller to start winding. The machine will stop automatically when the bobbin is full.
  7. Cut the thread and return the bobbin winder spindle to the left.

2.4 Threading the Machine

  1. Raise the presser foot lever.
  2. Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
  3. Follow the numbered threading path indicated on the machine, ensuring the thread passes through all guides and the take-up lever.
  4. Thread the needle from front to back.
  5. Insert the wound bobbin into the bobbin case, ensuring the thread feeds correctly.
  6. Close the bobbin cover.

3. Operating Instructions

This section details the basic operation of your Elna eXplore 120 sewing machine.

3.1 Stitch Selection

The Elna eXplore 120 offers 13 built-in stitches and a 4-step buttonhole. To select a stitch:

  1. Turn the Stitch Pattern Dial to the desired stitch symbol.
  2. Adjust the Stitch Length Dial (up to 4mm) and Stitch Width Dial (up to 5mm) as needed for your chosen stitch and fabric. Preset lengths are available for stretch stitches.

3.2 Free Arm Sewing

To sew tubular items like sleeves, cuffs, or trouser hems, utilize the free arm feature:

  1. Grasp the front accessory storage tray and pull it towards you to remove it.
  2. The narrow free arm is now exposed, allowing you to slide fabric around it for easier sewing of small, circular items.
  3. To return to flatbed sewing, simply slide the accessory tray back into place until it clicks.

3.3 Sewing a Buttonhole

The Elna eXplore 120 features a 4-step buttonhole function:

  1. Attach the Buttonhole Foot.
  2. Set the Stitch Pattern Dial to the first buttonhole step (usually indicated by a square symbol).
  3. Sew the first side of the buttonhole.
  4. Adjust the Stitch Pattern Dial to the subsequent steps (2, 3, 4) to complete the remaining sides and bar tacks of the buttonhole.
  5. Use the seam ripper to carefully open the finished buttonhole.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your sewing machine.

4.1 Cleaning

  1. Always unplug the machine from the power outlet before cleaning.
  2. Remove the needle plate and bobbin case.
  3. Use a small brush to remove lint and dust from the bobbin area and feed dogs.
  4. Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

4.2 Needle Replacement

Replace the needle regularly, especially when sewing different fabric types or if the needle becomes bent or dull.

  1. Turn off the machine and unplug it.
  2. Loosen the needle clamp screw.
  3. Remove the old needle.
  4. Insert a new needle with the flat side facing the back of the machine, pushing it up as far as it will go.
  5. Tighten the needle clamp screw securely.

  • Cause: Incorrect needle size or type for fabric, bent or dull needle, improper threading.

  • Cause: Incorrect tension, poor quality thread, needle inserted incorrectly, burrs on needle plate or bobbin case.
  • Solution: Adjust thread tension. Use good quality thread. Ensure the needle is inserted correctly. Check for and remove any burrs.

5.3 Fabric Not Feeding Properly

  • Cause: Feed dogs lowered, presser foot pressure too low, lint accumulation.
  • Solution: Ensure feed dogs are in the up position. Adjust presser foot pressure if applicable (refer to specific machine settings). Clean lint from feed dog area.
