4. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of your LiFePO4 battery.

4.1 Safety Precautions

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and insulated gloves.
  • Ensure the battery is disconnected from any loads or charging sources before installation or maintenance.
  • Avoid short-circuiting the battery terminals.
  • Do not immerse the battery in water or allow it to get wet.
  • Do not disassemble or modify the battery.

4.2 Connecting Batteries (Series and Parallel)

Your VEMDIA LiFePO4 batteries can be connected in series or parallel to achieve higher voltage or capacity.

  • Parallel Connection: Connect positive terminals to positive terminals and negative terminals to negative terminals. This increases total capacity (Ah) while maintaining the same voltage (12V). Up to 4P (400Ah) is allowed.
  • Series Connection: Connect the positive terminal of one battery to the negative terminal of the next. This increases total voltage (V) while maintaining the same capacity (100Ah). Up to 4S (48V/51.2V) is allowed.
  • Ensure all batteries used in a series or parallel bank are of the same brand, model, and capacity, and are fully charged to the same voltage before connecting.

4.3 Mounting

Mount the battery in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated area. Ensure it is secured to prevent movement during operation.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Charging

The VEMDIA LiFePO4 battery can be recharged using several methods:

  • LiFePO4 Battery Charger: A 14.6V 20A charger is recommended for a fast charge time of approximately 5 hours.
  • Solar Panel with Controller: Connect to a compatible solar charge controller.
  • Alternator (Generator): Can be charged via an alternator, ensure proper voltage regulation.

The built-in BMS includes low-temperature charge protection. Charging will be prevented if the battery temperature is below 0°C (32°F).

Diagram showing low temperature charge protection: charging turns on at 32F (0C) and off at 32F (0C), with a charging temperature range of -4F to 104F (-20C to 40C)

Figure 5: Low Temperature Charge Protection

This image illustrates the battery's low-temperature charge protection feature, indicating that charging is enabled at temperatures above 0°C (32°F) and disabled at or below 0°C (32°F), with an optimal charging temperature range of -20°C to 40°C (-4°F to 104°F).

5.2 Discharging

The battery provides a continuous discharge current of up to 100A. The BMS will protect the battery from over-discharging. Unlike lead-acid batteries, discharging LiFePO4 batteries below 50% DOD does not shorten their lifespan.

6. Maintenance and Storage

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically check battery terminals for corrosion and ensure connections are secure.
  • Cleaning: Keep the battery clean and dry. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the casing. Do not use harsh chemicals.
  • Storage: If storing the battery for an extended period, ensure it is charged to approximately 50-70% of its capacity. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid Deep Discharge During Storage: While LiFePO4 batteries tolerate deep discharge well during use, for long-term storage, maintaining a partial charge is recommended to preserve overall health.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your VEMDIA LiFePO4 battery.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Battery not charging
  • Charger not connected properly.
  • Charger is not compatible with LiFePO4.

  • Ensure charger is specifically for LiFePO4 batteries (14.6V recommended).
  • Move battery to a warmer environment.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the charger; BMS should reset.
No power output from battery
  • Battery is fully discharged.
  • BMS has activated over-discharge protection.
  • Over-current protection activated.
  • Loose or corroded terminals.
  • Recharge the battery.
  • Disconnect load, then reconnect after a few minutes for BMS reset.
  • Reduce load, then reconnect.
  • Clean and tighten terminal connections.
Battery gets warm during operation
  • High discharge/charge rate.
  • Poor ventilation.
  • This is normal under heavy loads, but ensure it doesn't exceed 50°C.
  • Ensure adequate airflow around the battery.
