2. Safety Information

Always read and understand all safety warnings and operating instructions before using this instrument. Failure to do so may result in injury or damage to the meter or equipment under test.

  • Do not apply voltage or current that exceeds the maximum specified limits for the meter.
  • Use caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
  • Ensure the test leads are in good condition and properly connected for the desired measurement.
  • Do not use the meter if it appears damaged or if the case is open.
  • Always disconnect power to the circuit and discharge all high-voltage capacitors before measuring resistance, continuity, or diodes.
  • Do not operate the meter in explosive gas, vapor, or dusty environments.
  • Adhere to local and national safety codes.

4. Setup

4.1. Battery Installation

The UT210E requires batteries for operation. To install or replace batteries:

  1. Ensure the meter is powered off and disconnect all test leads from the input jacks.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the meter.
  3. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw(s) on the battery cover.
  4. Remove the cover and insert the correct type and number of batteries, observing polarity markings.
  5. Replace the battery cover and secure it with the screw(s).

4.2. Connecting Test Leads

For most voltage, resistance, capacitance, diode, and continuity measurements, connect the test leads as follows:

  • Insert the red test lead into the VΩCAPHz input jack.
  • Insert the black test lead into the COM (common) input jack.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Power On/Off and Auto-Ranging

Turn the function dial to any measurement position to power on the meter. The meter features auto-ranging, automatically selecting the appropriate measurement range. The meter will automatically power off after approximately 15 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life.

5.2. AC/DC Current Measurement (Clamp)

To measure AC or DC current using the clamp jaw:

  1. Turn the function dial to the 20A or 200A AC/DC current range.
  2. Press the MODE button to select between AC or DC current measurement.
  3. Open the clamp jaw and enclose only one conductor of the circuit. Ensure the jaw is fully closed.
  4. Read the current value on the display. The minimum resolution is 1mA, with a maximum range of 100A.

5.3. AC/DC Voltage Measurement

To measure AC or DC voltage:

  1. Turn the function dial to the V position.
  2. Press the MODE button to select between AC (~) or DC (—) voltage.
  3. Connect the red test lead to the positive side of the circuit and the black test lead to the negative/ground side.
  4. Read the voltage value on the display. The meter supports true RMS measurements for AC voltage.

5.4. Resistance Measurement (Ω)

To measure resistance:

  1. Turn the function dial to the ΩCAP position.
  2. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before connecting the test leads.
  3. Connect the test leads across the component to be measured.
  4. Read the resistance value on the display.

5.5. Capacitance Measurement (F)

To measure capacitance:

  1. Turn the function dial to the ΩCAP position.
  2. Press the MODE button until the capacitance symbol (F) appears on the display.
  3. Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged before connecting the test leads.
  4. Connect the test leads across the capacitor terminals.
  5. Read the capacitance value on the display.

5.6. Diode Test (→|)

To test diodes:

  1. Turn the function dial to the ΩCAP position.
  2. Press the MODE button until the diode symbol (→|) appears.
  3. Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode of the diode.
  4. The display will show the forward voltage drop (approximately 3.0V for standard diodes, up to 3.2V for LEDs). Reverse the leads to check for an open circuit.

5.7. Continuity Test ())))

To perform a continuity test:

  1. Turn the function dial to the ΩCAP position.
  2. Press the MODE button until the continuity symbol ()))) appears.
  3. Connect the test leads across the circuit or component.
  4. If continuity exists (resistance below a certain threshold), the meter will emit an audible beep.

5.8. Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detection

The NCV function allows for detection of AC voltage without direct contact.

  1. Turn the function dial to the NCV position.
  2. Move the top of the clamp meter (jaw head) close to the conductor or outlet.
  3. If AC voltage is detected, the meter will emit an audible buzzer sound and a red LED will flash.

5.9. VFC Function

The VFC (Variable Frequency Control) function allows for accurate measurement of AC voltage and AC current in circuits with frequency conversion interference.

  1. Turn the function dial to the VFC position (if available, or select V and then activate VFC via MODE button if applicable).
  2. Proceed with AC voltage or current measurement as described above.

5.10. Special Functions (ZERO, REL, MAX, HOLD)

  • ZERO: Used to zero out residual readings in DC current measurement for improved accuracy.
  • REL (Relative Mode): Measures the difference between a stored reference value and the current reading.
  • MAX (Maximum Hold): Captures and displays the maximum measured value.
  • HOLD (Data Hold): Freezes the current reading on the display for easier viewing.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Cleaning

Wipe the meter's case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the input terminals free of dirt and moisture.

6.2. Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator (≤2.5V) appears on the display, replace the batteries promptly to ensure accurate readings. Refer to section 4.1 for battery installation instructions.

6.3. Storage

If the meter is not used for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage. Store the meter in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
