5. Operating Instructions

Before starting, ensure the chipper is on a stable, level surface and clear of any obstructions. Always wear appropriate safety gear.

Pre-Operation Checklist:

  • Check engine oil level.
  • Check fuel level.
  • Inspect blades for sharpness and damage.
  • Ensure all guards and safety devices are in place and functioning.
  • Verify that the emergency stop button is operational.
  • Clear the area around the chipper of debris and bystanders.

Starting the Engine:

  1. Ensure the fuel valve is open.
  2. Set the choke to the "CHOKE" position (if engine is cold).
  3. Set the throttle to the "FAST" position.
  4. Pull the recoil starter handle firmly until the engine starts.
  5. Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke to the "RUN" position.
  6. Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes before beginning operation.

Chipping Operation:

  1. Feed branches and brush into the feeding chute. Do not force material.
  2. Feed material slowly and evenly to prevent clogging.
  3. Do not chip material larger than 4 inches in diameter.
  4. Avoid feeding material with rocks, metal, or other foreign objects.
  5. Adjust the 360° rotary discharge chute and deflector to direct chipped material as desired.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your MechMaxx GS650 wood chipper. Always disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance.

Routine Checks:

  • After Each Use:
    • Clean the chipper thoroughly, removing all debris from the feeding chute, discharge chute, and cutter housing. The side opening hinge design allows for easy cleaning.
    • Inspect blades for wear or damage.
    • Check all fasteners for tightness.
  • Every 5 Hours of Operation:
    • Check engine oil level and add if necessary.
    • Inspect air filter and clean or replace if dirty.
  • Every 25 Hours of Operation:
    • Change engine oil.
    • Inspect spark plug and clean or replace if necessary.
    • Check drive belts for tension and wear. Adjust or replace Kevlar belts as needed.

Blade Maintenance:

The GS650 uses double-edge CR12MoV steel blades. When one edge becomes dull, the blade can be flipped to use the second edge. When both edges are dull, the blades should be sharpened or replaced.

  • To access the blades, ensure the engine is off and the spark plug wire is disconnected.
  • Open the side access panel on the cutter base.
  • Carefully remove the blade retaining bolts and remove the blades.
  • Install new or sharpened blades, ensuring they are correctly oriented and all bolts are securely tightened.
